Weird things about 3/4 drive socket styles made by Tekton

I’m not a 3/4 drive socket user tbh just interested in tools and I like tekton alot always curious to see what there doing.

So they started with shallow chrome only in 6 and 12 point. Now there adding 6 point deep chrome but not 12 point deep chrome.

Coming soon is impacts too but only 6 point and only shallow.

also on metric side they stop at 50mm but roll to 2 1/2” on sae which is weird they don’t do a 55mm on par.

Now for me I would think if I’m going to use 3/4 drive it’s for axles and alot are 12 point and for axles you want deep sockets. No deep impacts. No 12 point impacts. No deep 12 point chromes.

Im guessing these are for farm stuff and industrial. But my main wonderings are for 3/4 drive wouldn’t deep be the default size you want? If you can fit a whole 3/4 drive tool you can prob fit a deep socket? And most people won’t get shallow and deep in these just one so wouldn’t deep make more sense? A shallow 3/4 drive is deeper than a shallow 1/2 drive but not as deep as a 1/2 deep.

Now for big sizes I always heard 12 point is better since it matters less. And for using a breaker bar wouldn’t you want 12 point? Like using a 6 point combination wrench *****. And on a giant 6 foot breaker bar a 6 point socket would ****.

It does but it works and it grabs.

3” nut, 1” drive breaker bar and an 8’ pipe. Had to bounce my 265lb self on it to break it loose. I have a very complete set of 3/4” and 1” drive from 15/16” on 3/4” drive up to 4-1/2” on 1” drive and they’re all 6pt sockets. Larger than the 3” below and I’ll switch to spline drive. I have a few spline drive sockets up to 5” for various things. I’ll have to look if any of them would be considered “deep” sockets but they’re all mostly just regular ol’ sockets.


If I need a “deep” socket on something that large I’ll either make one out of a piece of 2” thick plate or use a pipe wrench and my mini excavator. Things come loose one way or another.


If not I’ll cut them off. Can’t be stuck if it’s liquid.

most people don't know what big stuff is. the fire wrench is your friend sometimes.

on the big ****. does anyone give a **** what tekton does.,

i could care less on the smaller so why worry on the big sizes?

I don't need deeps for 3/4 drive, don't need 12 points either. Shallows are almost as deep as 1/2 drive deeps already and with a torque multiplier or long *** breaker bar the extra height makes getting everything stable a pain.

That said I'm not pulling axles with them or nuts off long spindles, I'm pulling long bolts out of assemblies or (years ago) hydraulic cylinder piston nuts.

Oh yeah, also pressing seals and bearings, bearings don't care how many points the socket has either.

Not sure that the seal would care if the socket is chrome or not. When pressing or hammer smacking I always put a chunk of wood between the socket and force applying device. I honestly don’t care if the finish is damaged on my sockets. They’re tools, they’re gonna show battle scars.
If I can protect things I will but it’s not a hyper focus like some on GJ seem to have.


When I got my latest 1” set I joked that I was getting a seal install kit that’d double as a socket set . Nice little vintage 1/2” Craftsman ratchet in there for scale.

The hot wrench makes anything come loose

When you make the jump up from 3/4” to 1” not much changes. From 1” to 1-1/2” or #5 spline baby get the checkbook ready. The last #5 spline stuff I got was an 8” Proto extension for $85 and a 4-7/8” Proto socket for $125. They were both used on eBay. New stuff approaches space shuttle prices.

100% agree. If I break out 3/4” or larger drive stuff I want stability.

Most of what I use the bigger stuff for is tillage equipment or cylinder nuts as well.

I use my 1”+ stuff more as bearing/seal install devices than anything lol. They work soooooo well.
