I dont really have any air tools yet and I wont be using them a whole lot but I would still like to have a set when I need it. I saw this set in the lowes black friday ad. Regular price is 99.99 and its on sale for 59 and I was wondering if it was a good set for the money. It would end up being an early christmas present from my parents so Im not looking for anything expensive, just enough to get odd jobs done. So let me know what you think of the set.

It might be ok for someone starting out that currently doesn't have any air tools. Personally I would recommend saving your money and wait to get better tools.

I purchased a somewhat similar kit from Coleman a few years back as my first air tools. Not bad for the price paid but the impact wrench that came with it can't even take off lug nuts torqued at 80 ft - lbs. I've since then upgraded everything to better brands and models.

I'd be leery of it, but that's just due to the price and quantity of plastic. I think most of us have accumulated our air tools over a period of time, not in a set. I especially wouldn't cheap on the ones that will tend to see high duty cycles when they're used. For me, the most frequently used air tool at home is a 90-degree die grinder with various Roloc pads. Impact gun is almost never used (only when I need it to break a fastener free, which is near never). Air ratchets used rarely too, and of the 3 I own the 1/4" sees far and away the most duty.

I cannot speak for Leow's or Home Depot; BUT when I worked @ Sears... customers complained that the 1/2" impacts that came in allot of these kits/compressor combo's, many times wouldn't even get lug nuts off of their cars. Just like anything else; when you are dealing with impacts that sell for next to nothing; you can't expect them to be high quality. The air ratchets; haven't heard anything bad about those, usually low end ratchets, are very loud and many times have slow rpms. Die grinders seem to be less of a issue; they are not made of much... basically just an air motor! Small, cheap air hammers; tend to not be powerful or have enough of a stroke to do the heavy duty jobs that you may ask of it!
What does all this tell you? Nothing really changes; you get what you pay for.... quality costs, the cheap stuff maybe ok but it is hit/miss.... you could always buy a kit, try it out and see if it fits your needs; if not return it! :)

I would save up the money for a good 1/2 drive impact wrench first, it will likely be the most used tool and you'll not want to skimp on the quality.

Then decide which other tools you will really use and buy them as you have the money.

Thanks for all the info and advice. I knew I wouldnt be getting the best tools as it was pretty cheap, but it seems like they would be a waste of money so I will just wait and save for better stuff and probably buy the stuff individually.

The tools in those kits are junk. I suggest picking the air tool you will use most and buying a decent one. For most people that would probably be a 1/2" impact gun. This way, you'll start with a tool you're happy with and you can slowly add on from there.

I have the same kit, paid $80 for it though, a great starter kit if you know nothing about air tools or how to use them (I didn't). If the gun shows 350 ft-lbs its the same one I have in my kit. I easily take off lugs and even axle nuts on a 15 year old import that spent time in NY state. I was impressed to say the least. The others tools are fine, get the job done and work. Not much more to say about things that spin, hammer, and blow air...

Oh they also come w/ a 3 year warranty, just keep the receipt in the box.

I eventually want to buy a 2135ti but for $60 they are good tools, definitely a step above Harbor Freight. Personally I think 3/8" ratchets are worthless now after using them. Give me a lightweight 1/4" and 3/8" impact any day.

That has been my experience. I wish I had listened to the advice that I was given when I was your age. Buy a quality tool once, take care of it and it will last you a lifetime.

Depending on what you are doing you can ask on this board for recomendations about individual tools. An air tool that is high quaility and well cared for can last for a decade or more of occasional use.

And of course it depends on what you need. On a budget, I'd try to avoid buying what you don't really need and instead buy better quality tools you'll actively use.

Impact guns never touch my vehicles other than as a last-resort. I keep my vehicles well-maintained and use anti-seize where appropriate, and always torque the fasteners to spec. That means a torque wrench, not an impact gun. One of my cars has fancy, expensive two-piece lugnuts and I'd kill someone if they put an impact gun to them. Of course, I don't let the tire shop have my car (only the wheels), so an impact gun will never kiss my lugnuts. :)

We're all different, of course. I'm ****-retentive about my own vehicles. If I had $2 lugnuts and very cheap wheels, I'd have no problem using an impact on my wheels. But how often would I have them off on a vehicle I didn't spend much time maintaining? Almost never, which means the impact gun would save me a few minutes every several years. That's just me, and I'm not telling anyone else what tools are right for them. I'm just saying that if you're looking for an air tool as a gift idea, pick one you have a need for that isn't easily met by a hand tool, and select a decent-quality one. For me, the die grinders (Ingersoll-Rand 3101G is fantastic for the price) and random orbitals (I love the Dynabrades) see much more use than all of my other air tools combined. Well, not counting blow guns. For others (flat-rate mechanics, for example), it's a completely different story.

Fixed that for you. You had it right in the first paragraph - but slipped up a bit later.

A sears 3 1/2 hp electric

This is a great way to look at things and makes sense for me. For the few times I may actually use it now, I will just wait to buy something better that will last longer.

I had a similar tool kit from Lowe's ended up selling it at my Yard Sale for $10. The impact wrench couldn't take off my lugnuts and I rarely use a air wrench. My kit only had the 1/2 impact and a wrench kit. I did buy a display model 231g IR 1/2 air wrench from Lowe's a few weeks later and it's been worth every penny.

From my understanding and from what I seeing on the GJ most people like the IR tools; but for the most part the majority of my tools are CP air tools and they have not let me down in all these years.:)

Don't bother...

I have a very similar kit, and I wouldn't do it again if given the choice.

The impact is Ok, but nothing to write home about. Not very powerful really, but for lugs and such it's fine.

The ratchet is ok too, but IMO bulky and really loud. Don't have a lot of expierience to compare it with, but doesnt strike me as great in use.

The chisel is a total POS, mine broke when I tried it for the 1st time just to make sure to worked. the back of the main body SPLIT and I threw it away.

All the little assorted bits are fine I guess.

I agree with those above, choose the tool you need most and get a decent IR and an accessory kit with all the little mess. Then get the rest of the tools in time as they are needed.

I have this kit (gift from wife) and honestly the air impact and air hammer did not work... non-functioning out of the box. Ending up using BiL's 20 yr old Craftsman. Have not had the time or energy to try and get a refund/exchange.

I can't speak to that kit, but I purchased one just like it from CH at Costco about 10 years ago. It was great! Air tools are so simple that even lower quality ones like these work well. Plus all the little bits and stuff cost a fortune to buy as you need them individualy. I am a heavy hobby user and have owned top shelf air ratchets and other tools. All in this kit will be fine for even pro use in the average shop.
That is all except the impact wrench. That will be almost useless!!!!!! In my experience any of these standard duty impacts only put out 200 pounds of torque. You can generate more torque with a 12 ratchet and your arm. I now have many fancier air tools, but these will serve any hobby mechanic fine and is a great value! You will be happy with it. Just loose the impact, fleabay it for $10-20 or give ot as a christmaz gift and get yourself a good impact, great tool if you have a good one and worthless if it is not. They don't put good impacts in kits by the way.
I say definately buy that kit if you are not a full time mechanic and just starting out with air tools.

I can't speak to this kit per say, but my inexpensive starter kit was a great value.
