I bought an old Reed Vice… The Company said it read made before they got their patent. Please help date and appraise this vice

You might share a photo or two. It's rather difficult to assist you without being able to see said vise (not vice, btw).

Many Reed vises were inexpensive and low quality. Some were better. The better ones have bolt-on vise jaws. The rest have cast-in vise jaws. When they're trashed, that vise is trashed.

I have one or two older Reed vises with cast in jaw inserts. They are VERY hard metal that should stand up to many years of hard use. Let’s wait for someone who uses an old Reed for really hard daily work to comment further.

Reed made one or two models of less than top shelf vises but as a whole, I disagree with the statement that Reed made many low quality vises.

Here's a picture of my Reed vise I got from my dad. It had the jaw repaired, but it has worked well for me so far.
