I managed to land this old Stanley 697A on MP for $40. I cleaned it up and put some new bearings in it and now it runs damn near silently.
Problem is, it wasn’t exactly complete. The last owner was only using one side and the other side only had the inner arbor flange on it. And no tool rests, eye shields, or outer wheel covers were to be had.
The auction site has some vintage parts for a 600, but I’m not sure if those will definitely fit my machine if I decide to go the vintage route. It also seems like aftermarket tool rests and eye shields aren’t tough to find.
I am, however, having a tough time finding solid outer arbor flanges that are the right size to match the cast iron inners. I’d rather avoid the cheap pressed ones, if possible. Anyone have any leads on a couple of those, or someone that could fabricate them out of steel without charging an arm and a leg?
Ironically enough, the grinder is a side project in the lead up to getting a lathe I bought up and running. And an arbor flange would be a great first lathe project. But alas, the lathe still sits sadly silent, for now.
