I was just contemplating how my neighbor has a shop twice as big as mine but it is dedicated to wood working. In comparison, my shop is set up to be flexible for minor wood and metal work, automotive, and of course all the general fix it stuff. My shop has distinct areas where I try to keep wood work and metal work separate but space remains fluid depending on what tools and space I need. The lift does multiple duties for both automotive as well as to provide a great work area and lifting platform. Benches have both metal and wood tops and I have fixed and mobile work stations.
Thinking back to my neighbor, his shop is great for wood working but severely limited for other work due to the arrangement and space needed for all his woodworking tools. My shop doesn't have the fancy large tools but it gets all my stuff done. Luckily, if I need a table saw my neighbor is happy to oblige and likewise, when he needs welding, automotive, or general help I'm happy to oblige.
