Hi guys

Just picked up this beauty. It's in really nice shape and hardly looks used.

It's my first drill press and I got it as I need to drill through a distributor shaft.

I have no idea what the blue clamp on thing is used for? The little aluminum slug is scalloped out to rest on the handle balls.

It has "drill press hold down" cast into it and made by what looks like distin or digstim corporation.

Here's mine, Welch 1100 Cam-Lock Drill Press Clamp, should have a similar operation...
The loose silver fitting needs to be installed into the hole at the end of the blue arm, with the large dimpled disc end facing your table...

Thanks for the explanation. The aluminum slug was in the hole, I took it out for the photo to show the machined bevel, it is a really loose fit.

The handle clamp does release fully to allow effortless up and down adjustment.

So this would be used anytime I can't have something in the vice?

I got it as I need to drill through a distributor shaft.

If you are drilling the pin out of a gear at the end of the shaft, don't drill all the way through. Drill the peened end and only go through the gear, not into the shaft. Use a bit that is slightly smaller than the pin and drill right in the center. Then you can drive the pin out with a small pin punch without the risk of enlarging the hole in the shaft.

I often use it to clamp the vise down after I position the vise.

-Since this is your first DP with a project already planned you can ask questions regarding work holding, drills to use, and/or procedures to follow by posting here. Some members have much experience to draw from, others have less. Your new-to-you DP looks nice enough, does it run fairly silent? Does the spindle seem solid with no lateral movement? Congratulations on the purchase.

Correct. Unless you have a vise with an integral XY positioning stage, you usually need to move the vise to position the workpiece under the drill bit.

It does run silent. Yes it seems solid with no movement, and a lot less movement than my hand drill

Gotcha.

I positioned the vise with my distributor in it. Where it needs to be set, my work piece clamp isn't able to clamp down on the vise in a solid way, due to the fixed arc of the arm. So I will just use a couple of G clamps for that job.
