Craftsman 5197 AND 5198 registry

Another 5198, this one is dated 4/49. I got this about 3 years ago in north Georgia from original owners.

Thought I would post where my 5198 wound up. Cleaned it up and applied BLO last year. Here it sits awaiting duty.

I was just thinking the other day how long its been since we've added to this registry. TWO 5198's in one month! You gentlemen have inspired me to start on my own 5198 restoration! Keep up the good work GJ!

EDIT!! I jumped the gun. My bad, I forgot Garagelogistician already had his 5198.

That puts the numbers at:

05197 - 31
05198 - 17

Still pretty close at 2:1 for the 5197.

First post here…came across a 5198 yesterday that was at a local garage sale. Heard about the registry in another group. Seems to be pretty low use just very dirty.

Off for cleaning. I’m always impatient and never take pictures when I first get the vise. Vise is only missing the locking piece for the spindle nut.

By the way, if anybody stumbles across a main nut for a 5198, please give me a shout. I could use one.

What is the issue with yours? Repair may be the only real solution. (17 others known in existence?)

Hey thanks for coming over and posting. I think I saw your post on the other site. I meant to ask you to post here. I’m glad the others were on the job. Great vise! If you got it at a garage sale I’m sure none here want to know the price lol.

It was someone who knew what they had. I paid a fair price for it. It was not a $10 find lol I will post additional images as I progress through cleaning and getting it put back together

Repairing it isn't practical. I'll probably machine one from scratch instead if I have to.
