I bought a Kobalt bare battery from Amazon.
It was still in the package so didnt suspect a counterfeit.
It goes bad on me while still having about 2 yrs left on the 3 yr warranty.
I call the warranty dept and they denigh the claim, stating it has to be bought at a Lowes.
This is the first Ive heard of this.

It may not be counterfeit, but Kobalt is a Lowe's brand. Buying anything outside of Lowe's would be considered unauthorized. Same with buying Milwaukee on Amazon, no warranty.

Yet you can buy Milwaukee at Lowes or Home Depot.
Is that also restricted?
The only “Milwaukee” branded products on the Lowes website are the Milwaukee branded hand trucks and similar products, and my understanding is that that “Milwaukee” brand is unrelated to the power tool manufacturer.

Kobalt is a Lowes store brand, and while you can buy Kobalt tools off of Amazon, none of the sellers seem to be listed as “Lowes”, meaning the products may either be counterfeit, or “gray market” items.
“Gray Market” items are items that are being resold by non-official dealers.
The current Kobalt Warrantees seem to list “proof of purchase” and “original purchaser” as requirements, meaning “gray market” items would be excluded.

Why's that? MW sign exclusive with HD or something like that?
Home Depot is an authorized seller, Lowes and Amazon are not. There are other authorized sellers like Acme Tools, Grainger, Ace, Northern Tool and more. You can check here: https://www.milwaukeetool.com/buy-now
If you buy could from other places like Amazon it could be a gray market item without a warranty or in the worst case, stolen merchandise. That said, I have bought plenty from non-authorized sellers but I know I will never try to do a warranty claim, to me the savings is worth the risk but I am just a diyer. It may be a different matter in a professional shop.

This: I bought a Karcher pressure washer from Home Depot. It crapped out after the first use, two months after I bought It. It had something like a five year manufacturers warranty.

Karcher did the warranty exchange with no hassle, but I had to provide proof of purchase that I bought it from an authorized retailer. HD is an authorized retailer, and the necessary proof was in my HD credit card records on the computer.

If I had bought it from a non authorized retailer off eBay, it may not have worked out. Same for Amazon.
