Here's my American Scale No 79. It a 6 incher and weighs around 190 lbs. It still needs to be disassembled, cleaned, and painted. Hopefully the pictures work.

Here it's eating a 5 gallon bucket. The jaws open about 11 inches. There's a half inch on either side of the bucket.

I left a message with the seller of this one. Just waiting to hear back. Looks like a late model Wilton. What size and model do you think it is? He's asking $85. What's a good offer?

Looks decent sized in relation to the cart.

For anyone who owns a British made Record vice here is a potted history of the Record Tool Co, Sheffield, England.
Some rather sad pictures of urban decay in what used to be a thriving factory...
http://www.neolithicsea.co.uk/recordtoolcompany/index.html

Thanks for that, the gallery there is worth a look and even the graffiti on the walls of the now defunct Record factory has been well done.
Its sad that Record has moved its vice production abroad and consequently I can't see me buying any new Chinese made Record tools because of that now.
There's enough good old ones kicking about on Ebay in the UK to keep even the most serious vice fan going.
Also, for some strange reason I'm finding myself wanting that stool that's been left on its own when the Record factory closed down.

Here is a video of that same factory in it's heyday.

I know how you feel. I used to roam the old Brown & Sharpe complex when it was abandoned.
Theres nothing strange about wanting part of the factory for a souvenir, especially a useable one like that stool.
If you are close to the factory, keep your eyes on it. Eventually it will be razed or refurbished and when it is ask the work crews if you can rummage about for a souvenir.
I got a few things from B&S while it was being made into luxury apartments.

Grab it! Looks in great condition, likely worth double the asking or more depending on the exact model (jaw width... 3.5" = 350S, 4" = 400S, 5" = 500S etc)

If he calls you and can give you the model# off the side. It almost looks like a 400S-450S. I would offer him an even $100. Why $15 more? Its more then he was expecting and and more then anyone that sees that ad is expecting to pay which is $85. That will put you right in the front of the line. I hope its a short drive. Tip, I've stolen alot of Wilton's by offering $5-$15 more. If thats a 400s, its looks new, worth $350, 450S $400
Call him again on a different # and leave your price. Try not to snooze on that one.

Thanks for the advise. Just spoke with him. He doesn't have much information about it. He's across town from me and will meet me tomorrow. We'll see what happens...

That could even be a C-1..I hope you land it.

OK, you got me curious... So happens I had my C2 and a hand truck just a few steps away, and my iPhone in my pocket.

Tried to get a similar angle. Here it is compared to the C2... Hard to tell, other photo is with a much wider angle lens.

Maybe the other one is a bit smaller? Shape of the jaw structure does look more like the C series than the machinist... Think Autopts nailed it with the C1!

Here's a vise I picked up last weekend. It's a Columbian D43 1/2-M4. It's weird that it doesn't say Cleveland, OH on it, just MADE IN USA.

Here's what *****.

5186498912_d6aefa6e94.jpg

It looks to me like it was cracked or something and it wasn't put together right afterward. Any opinions? It seems to work fine though. It's currently drying from the paint earlier today. Oh yeah, I paid $21 for it. I'm thinking of just giving this to my dad and picking up something nicer for myself.

What ***** even more is I missed out on a Rock Island 542-BX 4.5in jaws, 80+ pounds, asking price was $20 on Craigslist. It was listed for a week, but I didn't start getting into vises till it was too late and sold. I don't think I'll ever find a deal like that again.

Also, opinions on this vise?

It looks better built than the Columbian, even with the chunk missing. Thanks.

I just pick this one up at a swap meet. This Anvil/vise was patented on Jan 15 1895 by the Farwell/Adams Co. in Dubuque, Iowa.

I LIKE that! Up till now, I have never seen an anvil vise that looked very appealing to me, but that one is really nifty. Great score.

Yeah it's pretty cool. The rear jaw is removable/ajustable. You are able to move it back and forth as needed. In the pic you really can't tell but it has saw tooth like features under the face plate of the anvil, and opposite saw teeth under the rear jaw.

Also it can be used as a pipe vise, by moving the rear jaw back just a couple teeth and useing the face plate of the anvil as the third place of contact. See the patent (i cant really explain it). But very cool.

I agree with the others: this is the most interesting vise on the thread. I just created a saved search on ebay. Thanks for sharing...

I'd like to get an anvil. Found a huge one sitting in the front lawn of an antique shop in WV. Asked how much? Price was $75, but $200 loaded into my car. I had to say no thanks.

Very nice small Reed. All those oldies are built so much to scale that its hard to visualize how small that vise is. Two mounting bolts I think are fine considering what those small jaws can hold. I hope you have your snow plow ready!!

If its a Reed 204R on swivel base and nothings broken, hummmm...Go For It!! Call it "An Investment"

Thinking about to pickup the Reed 204 tomorrow and have a question to you guys. Does anyone know the jaws for the Reed are one piece with the body of the vise or they are replaceable.

Its a nice vise but I think $80 is a bit much considering you will have to put a hole thru your bench to mount it and unless you know how to braze on a new corner, its limiting how far it will be able to open it.

The bolts are 1/4". It does look like a schrunk 4 incher. Lotsa detail.
La Nina's got us real dry here in so. Colo. Lookin' like it could make our "water war" get pretty ugly this spring.

My before and after. Spur of the moment purchase. Stripped, wire-wheeled, primered, and painted. Probably shouldn't have painted the slide, but oh well. I'm giving it to my Dad for Birthday/Xmas. Might pick something up nicer for myself this weekend.
