Help! Trying to dial in my new-to-me planer

I just bought this Jet planer yesterday. My neighbor was talking me through the process as he has his own planer. We adjusted the height until we could slide a board through freely the adjusted it down slightly for a cutting pass. It started making a much deeper cut then we were expecting and started smoking. Give me ideas on what to check. Maybe my knives are dull?

Loosen those wing nuts on the top dust chute, probably remove anither cover inside and post some pics of the knives. As this is a planer/moulder I'd start with verifying what tooling is in it and is it installed correctly

Thanks! I went out first thing this morning and checked. Yep, one knife installed upside down!

That's actually a molder/planer. Swap the planing blades out for molder profiles and you can make moldings.

I've done that before with one of the blades on my rider mower and it didn't cut real well either.
