Outside light

High pressure sodium light with eye. Light goes out for a few minutes, then comes back on. I had this problem over 10 years ago but I don't remember what cause this. It is not easy to get to.
Bulb, eye, wiring is mast or head????????????
Any Ideas??

What you're seeing is called "cycling" and represents the end of useful life of the lamp.This is typical of HPS lamps.Replace the lamp(bulb) with one of the proper wattage ASAP.Failure to replace the lamp and allowing the cycling to continue can cause the ballast to burn up,a much more expensive repair than just a bad lamp.

I have a light like this one, that comes on during the daytime, and sometimes it doesn't come on at all for a few days at a time, day or night. I have changed the bulbs and the photo cell to no avail. Next is to change the entire light fixture, unless someone knows what is wrong with it.

Anything been changed around the light that might reflect the light back onto the eye? That would make it think it is daylight and go off. Then in a few min. it realizes it is dark and comes back on. Over and over.....
We have those little solar lights in the bushs in front of the house. They come on in the dark. But I have noticed that the one right in line with the driveway will go out when I am pulling in after dark. The headlights make it think it is daytime. It goes back on when I make the turn into the garage..

Boo Coo.....it's a bad bulb. Sodium vapor lights are bad for that. If it was staying on all the time,that would mean it had a bad photocontrol or a loose neutral.

Same here....lineman for the first 27 years,and distribution inspector for the last 2

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I changed bulb today. Not an easy job, ladder in dozer bucket. Bottom line it works. Has been on since dusk.

Let me ask this, Isnt it against the rules to put a high output sodium light so low that its at eye level. The neighbor in an effort to have better yard security has one only about 8 feet from the ground mounted on the side of his house,When you go outside it bothers your vision.?
