Taking the rider apart again, backfire, stall under load. Electrical or fuel, that is the question. I was hoping to get done cutting grass for the season, but alas, we don't get those choices when using 25 year old mowers. First up to clean the carb.

More on the tractor. New head looks nice. Got everything together last night.
Went to put the valve cover on, no gasket in the kit! Briggs forgot to put it in the kit. Oh well, Amazon can have it to me today. Great, I'll finish it tonight.

Did the usual chores. Nothing to fix, nothing to build.
Hit a TOO yard sale--actually a clear-out sale for a local nursery/landscaping co. that went out of business. Spent a few bucks on new projects.
I actually need the pick and the wiring--that twisted-pair was most likely for buried lawn irrigation, but it's 14 AWG so will be handy for future work on the Brick. Do I need another pipe wrench? Nope, but I didn't have an Erie Tool Works PipeMaster. Now I do. $15 well spent.
I need to clean up the handle of the pick and remove the rust from the pipe wrench.
Wrench is easy enough:

Pulled a vintage Western Electric / Bell System code caller out of the shop at work. Been off and disconnected for the last 20 years… would love to hook it up in the home shop for nostalgia…..Been cleaning it up, gonna put it right next to the old company pay phone.

In long running projects, I often set a goal item to be mental “last thing” that completes the project. Working on the TKX install, I picked the shift knob.
Installed today.
Everything is now “done”.
Jacked the car down off of the cribbing. Pushed it out to the driveway, and prepared to test it. They recommend first start with transmission in neutral, clutch and brake pedals depressed. Seemed reasonable to me. So, after rechecking everything, reconnecting the battery, turned the key and … got a nice “whir” from the starter. Nothing else spinning.
Pushed back in to the garage. I’m not used to “race car” starters. Pulled the starter off, found that the Bendix gear was hitting the flywheel, so not engaging the gear teeth. Reinstalled using the other set of mounting holes, moving the starter outboard a bit, hopefully enough to let it engage.
Pushed out again. Turn key, and we’ve got engine rotation. And eventually, vroom. Let the engine warm up.
Let out the clutch, nothing happened. That’s good and expected, trans is in neutral. Clutch in, shift to first, clutch out, and we’re moving forward. Tested reverse, moving backward. Went for a short test drive.
Problems:
1. No speedometer. I probably need to reconfigure the 90* adapter to spin the other direction. Should be no big deal.
2. It doesn’t feel like the clutch is fully releasing. Either I need to spend more time bleeding the system, or it needs another shim. A shim means pulling everything back apart. So I’ll try bleeding it first.

That's called a pick and mattock. I have a few of varying sizes.
Cut a big bagful of Lowe's paint stirring sticks into 1/2" x 6" mini sticks. My wife works in the Lowe's paint department and wants to give little stir sticks to people who buy little sample jars.

Now to decide on a finish. Original paint (Japanning?) was black. I'm thinking BLO for the movable jaw and nut, black for the handle.
Gotta love electrolysis. It needs a few minutes of elbow grease and then a finish.

Zim, you do realize those D8OE castings have a 68 or 69 cc combustion chamber. Its going to drop compression on that Foxbody from stock 9:1 to 8.3 - 8.4 ?

Got out of the shop for a few hours today. I was planning on camping tonight, but that was a bust--I picked the wrong road to drive.
But I did conquer the notorious washboards of the South Fork Road! Last time I tried driving up there, I was in the Toyota Corolla, and the washboard was so bad my vision blurred to the point it wasn't safe to drive, so I bailed. With the Vanagon and its enhanced suspension--and tires aired down to 20 front 30 rear--it was a breeze.
End of the road at Two Pan trailhead:
I counted 72 rigs in the parking lot. Setting the picture up to hide those wasn't easy! I was leaned backwards over the bumper of a Crosstrek to frame it. Nice Engleman Spruce, 'though.
If you have a gold Crosstrek that was parked at Two Pan and has a scratch in the hood that resembles the pocket clip of a Benchmade knife, IT WASN'T ME! Honest. I saw that guy running away.
A ways down the road on the way back was Lostine Guard Station:
I helped to make and hang the new shakes on the roof of that building back in about '92. They're hand-split Western Larch (locally known as Tamarack) shakes.
The rarest of the rare:
A roadside bubbler from native water! These used to be everywhere on forest roads, but the lawyers got rid of almost all of them back in the '90s. Seeing as part of my job is sampling wild water sources, my analysis of this source is: Excellent!
One of my goals today was to find and collect some Chanterelles.
Check that off the list. Somehow, all the rain we've been getting here in the valley didn't hit that canyon, one mountain ridge away. It was crunchy dry walking in the woods. Enough for a small pot of chowder, anyway. Those dry-season chanterelles are all meat.
As for why the camping got cancelled, well, this road is limited to camping in developed sties only. Campgrounds and a dozen or so developed dispersed sites are your only choices. Campgrounds were all at least half-full (but cheap--$10/night, $5 with my geezer pass) and all the good dispersed sites were taken. Remaining dispersed sites were right on the dirt road--dust, anyone?
But I did get to eat some nice pizza at the best--and only--pizza joint in the county, so it wasn't a bust. I now have left over pizza for the next week. Hmm... maybe some sauteed chanterelles would be good on left-over pizza?

Made progress on V2 of the switch place turns out the V1 plate at 1/8" is too thick for the switches to snap into:

Nibbled Filed Nibbled some more - I discovered the length of the hole needed to be about a tenth inch longer to actually clear the snap catchs on the switch - better than the other problem! (Too big)

Sorted tools. Ordered some Tool Box Widgets and arranged them back a few months ago. Today pulled them out and not sure if I'll use them. Just don't like the "view" I'm a very visual type and these just don't cut it. So went back to the old method which I can "see" better what the hell I have.

Changed the self drive cable on a Honda lawnmower for my landlord as he's on vacation, and I don't feel like pushing, lol. about a 20 minute job not knowing what I was doing exactly, but easy enough. The OEM cable was 22 bucks from amazon.

Forgot to mention, while I was out of the shop and terrorizing the local back country roads, I came up on a very slow driver on a straight stretch of road. I signaled my intention to pass with a flash of the headlights and a short toot of the horn. As I pulled to the left to pass, they pulled to the left. I pulled farther to the left, they pulled farther to the left. WTF? They continued to slow, and I finally realized they wanted me to pass on the right. Who are these people?
This was a two-lane gravel road with plenty of room for me to pass safely and legally if they just stayed in their lane.

For future reference, next time you want to pass someone maybe try just using your turn signal? Flashing your lights and blowing your horn might seem aggressive to some and they might want to block you out of spite.

That occurred to me. The canyon I was driving seems to be about 90% tourons. It was also the most crowded backroad I've driven in a long while. I'm used to seeing no more rigs than I could count on one hand in a day's driving....they were from the UK....

It's pretty much SOP on backroads around here. Not lots of folks paying attention to what's behind them, and a sudden, unexpected pass can turn nasty.
I was roaring along at the break-neck speed of 30 mph. The rig I was overtaking was going less than 10.
I'm not talking leaning on the horn, just a quick toot to wake 'em up--and it's a Vanagon--ever heard a Vanagon horn? meep meep.

First weekend in the garage in 3 months. Was able to reclaim most of my horizontal surfaces and gets stuff put where it belongs. I’d disassembled my cord storage slider back before I went out of town, so I got it cleaned u, fixed a few issues it had, and got it loaded back up.
I'm with LeeG.
Cleaning up all the individual things laying around that shouldn't be where they're at. Reclaiming bench space, tool box counter space, and even some floor space.
It's disturbing how easily the place gets trashed by individual objects. Hose nozzle here, bolt cutters over there, piece of angle iron leaning against some object, a dirty rag on top of the garage fridge.. Empty milk jugs used for water, a plate with misc nuts and bolts, buckets of fertilizer laying everywhere, roll of electric fence wire.. The list is endless..
I vow to spend an hour every day putting away small things until there is nothing left.
