Hello all, I joined this board as I recently obtined one of the machines I wanted to be able to complete certain tasks around my home. What I did not realize as that I would end up purchasing a survivor that somehow missed the scrap heap. It is extreme overkill for homeowner tools, but I do not care. I dearly love old tools, and this one fits the niche perfecttly, with some overflow...
I procured a pre war Canedy-Otto MFG Co Royal 18 single spindle sliding head drill press with a wet base plate. It was sitting in someone's shop not being used for a number of years and he decided it was time to clear his shop.
I plan to completely disassemble her, clean everything of the accumulated old grease/oil, replace bearings, and give her a fresh slate blue paint job. I am not aware if the identification plate remains, covered in a thick layer of paint, or if it is gone. Either way, I have a very good picture of what is supposed to be on it, and if needed would love to get a reproduction.
The motor on it is a Brown-Brockmeyer B-LINE 3/4 HP single phase repulsion-induction. It is specifically built for a drill press and has "DP" as the beginning of the serial number. I've identified it as late 30's due to to it only having 3 patent numbers on it, the last being the mid/late 20's patent.
Last night I was able to locate an original bakelite knob to replace the missing one on the column lock lever, so I am stoked.
As well, it has a distributors tag on the right side of it, which is Stauss & Haas Inc New Orleans 12, La. I am under 75 miles away from where the Camp St location used to be.
Oh, and yes, it does run...
Anyways, any information/assistance with this old girl would be appreciated. I'm looking forward to engaging with y'all on these old machines that are few and far between, now a days...
TNX...

Just as an extra, this is the motor plate on it, and the pic of the badge that is supposed to be on the head...

What a nice looking machine and an excellent save. Is that a 6-step pulley and an original lift mechanism too? Wow.
Yes, it is all original!!!... It is a 6 speed press... The guy I bought it from said where he worked they were getting ready to get rid of it and he was asked if he wanted it, before it went goodbye... Thank goodness!!!...

-It is neither extreme or overkill. It is quite appropriate for someone that wants the machinery for drilling when needed. Extreme overkill is having a 5,000 lb jig borer in your basement for making holes. Congratulations on the purchase and welcome to the ranch. Pull up a chair and join the conversations.

Counting chickens before they hatch?
Nah, I bought and paid for the handle/knob and then he comes nearly 2 days later to tell me it was already sold and it somehow got relisted... I actually got notification it was getting ready to ship, and then 13 hours later get notification the seller cancelled the sale and I was getting a refund... Dang it...

If you haven't discovered Vintage Machinery website yet for info on your Royal 18, check it out.

Also info on Brown-Brockmeyer B-Line motors.
I've gone on it... Well, googled it, and when i went to it, my puter said it was unsecured and dangerous...
That is where I got the screen shot of the good head badge...
Google said there is someone on this forum that makes the replacement tags/badges... Does thaat sound correct?...

Hmm, none of mine say that, and work has a low bar on bad sites. Just don't give them your credit card.😉

But seriously, a very good site, best information on most stationary power tools, lots of manuals, pictures, history.

beerhippie, here is a pic , seen the question marks
I believe he was pondering why the reply about your band saw on my initial post where I was saying hello, and introducing the Blue Meanie...
In the bulletin board/forum world, as far as I am aware, that is usually considered a highjack of someone else's post...
I really wasn't particularly looking to compare tools... Lol...
And the question marks were not...
Oh, nevermind... Lol...

That's a good old drill press, but you're going to need more speed reduction than that setup to get it down slow enough for much metal work.
