Greatest Deal Find Ever

So I was browsing Amazon as I often do, and found a tool for $0.00. In my shopping cart it says "not yet available" for the price, with a grand total of $0.00.

I don't know, I thought mabe Amazon is sick of stocking these and wanted to clear them out of the warehouse quickly. They've had bizarre low prices before. So I add 3 things to my cart and checkout, and get a confirmation email which has a 68 cent total (I ordered a P2 bit for good measure).

Then I check my online status, and it says "Price not available (Before shipping, we'll e-mail the price to you for your approval.)". Bummer.

Here's the culprit - Beta pin punches: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001ODKEY4/?tag=atomicindus08-20

There's also a Beta tool cabinet, but I can't find the link anymore.

Edit: title changed from "biggest sale disappointment ever" to "greatest deal find ever"!

Sometimes a large portion of the better tools are listed as not in stock. That's annoying to me.

I got a confirmation for a big item, but not the 3 smaller ones.

I didn't want to be greedy so I didn't go crazy. That, and I didn't want to be stuck with a huge headache if/when the price shot up if it was an error.

*crossing my fingers* but also *bracing for disappointment*

good luck. I should be getting mine tomorrow :) I got tracking number in hand. I love doing the sort by lowest to highest, after typing in my key brand names. I do it religiously every morning drinking my coffee for 5-10 mins. scored countless items this way either dirt cheap or free. Best bet also is to get amazon prime membership as your orders get processed with priority. And if its a high dollar item, for $3.99 next day delivery :)

I do have prime, and was quoted a delivery date of Friday. I ordered last night, and expect shipping confirmation sometime tonight. Or a cancellation notice.

The other item has a ~160 lb shipping weight, so.... I don't know how that's going to work.

The shipping confirmation says that the order cannot be changed anymore, and gives an ETA of the 30th, probably by freight.

So you've actually gotten items for free before from Amazon?

Sweet. What's the normal price on the cabinet?
Not sure. There are so few US Beta distributors that it's hard to tell what the prices are. I haven't seen it on Amazon before yesterday.

Last night I believed that they would have sent me a quote to approve before shipping. It doesn't look like they're doing that. So now my hopes are up again.

No, but those cabinets look great!

It was this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OLXP1U/?tag=atomicindus08-20

How do you guys even find this stuff
Diligent searching. I periodically search according to brand, looking for deals. Sometimes I sort from low to high price. Yesterday I saw a few $0.00 items, and didn't know what to do, so I placed an order after confirming via chat that I'd be contacted if they wanted more money after I placed the order.

I'm confused. You ordered a Beta tool box costing you $0.00???
Maybe? I didn't know what was going on so I figured why not. Worst case scenario was they tell me it was a mistake along with the appropriate price, and cancel the order.

Either they wanted to give the products away, or it was a mistake. With Amazon, either one is evenly likely.

24 hours later there were a few $0.00 items still left, although they're gone now. I chatted with an Amazon rep, and they didn't know what to tell me.

So I went ahead and placed the order. First I expected a cancellation letter, but I received shipping confirmation. I still have no idea what to expect.

So yes, I ordered it for at that price and am now waiting to see how it pans out. Most likely will end in a cancelled order.

Nice job! What time did you order? Mine was too late to go out Monday, so it went out Tuesday.

If everything goes alright, I should be getting two pin punch sets and a torx key set + one Phillips bit on Friday, and the cabinet on Tuesday.

Pics!

If you get it, I can only bow to thee :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:
hehe. If I do get it, I'll wait one month before starting a thread about it.

That's 28 steps up to the 3rd floor. I'll probably have to take the drawers out to be able to take the chassis up the stairs.

IF everything pulls through. Or I'll tip the delivery guy(s) $20 to help me out.

True. You can tell him you're giving him more than you paid for the cabinet!

Unf-ingbelievable!

I just came back from the Fedex depot with a P2 insert bit, a set of Torx ball L-keys, and two sets of pin punches.

I am kicking myself for not ordering more of the $0.00 items when I saw them, but not really. I only ordered what I needed/wanted most.

I'm REALLY excited/nervous about the tool cabinet though. That has to come via a shipping company, and they didn't update the tracking information since Tuesday where it said "in transit".

If the cabinet really does manage to reach me, I might faint. I hope that changing the thread title to "greatest deal find ever" isn't a jinx.x

I wish I paid more attention to Amazon...
It was a freak occurance.

Step 1: run a search for Beta tools
Step 2: Sort from low to high price
Step 3: I see a random pair of snap ring pliers for $0.00 and order them
Step 4: I cancel the order
Step 5: I chat with Amazon, asking what would happen if I ordered the item. Amazon reps don't know what to tell me so they gave generic pricing responses before advising me to place the order with the chance to cancel if the price needs to be adjusted
Step 6: While on the chat I found more $0.00 items - a lot more
Step 7: I order 2 6-piece pin punch sets, a torx key set, a screwdriver bit (68 cents), and the tool cabinet.

I'm still doubtful that the cabinet will arrive, and in the back of my mind I'm sure that Amazon will send an invoice for the pin punches, but I'm still crossing my fingers.

The thing is, Amazon fulfills $0.00 orders all the time when sending replacement items/exchanges. Could that be how these $0 items made it out the door?

In any case, you can check Amazon 10, 20, 30 times a day, and still miss out on deals/price mistakes. The same goes with Sears.

According to Google Shopper, the tool cabinet had a price of $992.80, the pin punch sets $40.30, and the torx keys (different model number, with a holder instead of a pouch) $66.03.

I wouldn't call it a freak occurance, I would call it a pricing error. If you "purchase" anything from Amazon for $0.00 it is no different than walking out of a store with the tool under your shirt because the security guard wasn't paying attention.

I'm still not completely convinced that it's an error. The "error" was up for several hours, even after I chatted and emailed them about it. And then it wasn't caught before they shipped? That's somewhat unlikely.

I've had orders cancelled by Amazon before due to pricing errors, they're usually pretty quick to catch them. The only thing I could think of is that the $0.00 led a checker to believe the orders were replacement orders or something, but even then, the payment and order information is all wrong for such an order.

I've also seen Amazon do some really crazy pricing just to move merchandise. At the time, I was half convinced that it was a mistake and half convinced that it was intentional to move items out of the warehouse.

When I placed the order, I saw in the invoice that I'll be emailed a price before the items shipped. I then started this thread, disappointed that it wasn't some crazy fire sale. The email with prices for my approval never came, and the items shipped.

You're equating this to shoplifting? Get real. I really thought that maybe it was a crazy deal, and if not, surely they'd never ship the order out. Once I saw that I would have to approve the price prior to shipping, I figured out how much the items probably would have cost, and how much I was prepared to pay for them before requesting the orders cancelled.

I place an average of 12 or so orders with Amazon per month, with orders ranging from 1-10 items each. If I was 100% convinced that it was a price mistake, I wouldn't have bothered placing the order.

I like to think that I'm a moral guy, and am pretty offended that you're likening this to shoplifting or theft.

I'm still not convinced that the cabinet will be delivered, and if it is, I have no idea what I'm going to do.

A few years ago, I was at Lowes buying a new Dremel tool kit. The cashier scanned the wrong barcode and bagged the item. She scanned the rest of my items, and the subtotal came to $40 or so, less than the price of the Dremel. I thought about it for about four seconds before pointing out that she didn't scan the Dremel. She argued that she had, so I inspected the box, and then pointed out that she scanned the barcode that said "not a barcode, do not scan".

2 weeks ago, I ordered an HDMI cable from Amazon. The shipper was one of those smaller companies, and they couldn't deliver the item, and I didn't trust them to get it to me on time, so I emailed Amazon and they sent a new order with UPS. The UPS order arrived but the other didn't even though tracking said "delivered" after Amazon said it would be recalled and sent back to them.

I told them that although it said delivered, it hadn't been, and I didn't want to be responsible for shipping back a duplicate item that I never received. They said that was okay. A few days later, the item showed up, and then I emailed Amazon for instructions about how to ship the duplicate item back, and they thanked me for their honesty.

I chatted with Amazon during and after placing the order, and all they told me was that should the price be updated after I placed the order, I would be contacted and offered the chance to cancel the order.

The next day, a few items were still at $0.00.

I tried to raise as many red flags as I could while trying to figure things out. At this point, I can't even cancel the item, and I'm thinking that if it's a mistake, it will be recalled before a delivery is attempted.

I'm all for great tool deals, but would never defraud a store or engage in less than moral means to get a discount. In this case, I figured that either they wanted the cabinet gone, or it was a pricing error that would have resulted in a quick order cancellation. I couldn't find pricing for the cabinet before I ordered, and figured that if it was quoted at ~$300, I'd go ahead and approve the price.

Not quite, I did speak to amazon as well about this curious as to what price they might ding me for. They had told me their system reduces prices based on inventory and how long its been there, and the number of hits. They told me it is possible that it could go to zero for them to get rid of inventory for slow movers.

Not even close. That's outright stealing what you describe. That's not what he did.

It's more like finding something with a $0.01 price tag, you take it to the counter, ask for the manager, who says, not sure, go ahead a pay for it see if it rings up. Pay for it, it rings up, and you take away your great purchase for $0.01 while all your Garagejournal pals are absolutely green with envy and wondering why they can't get a great tool box for a penny.

Even if they send an invoice, you bought them for $0 fair and square the way I see it. There's always gonna be someone who says you stole it, just like the other deal threads from before. So someone, somewhere, had to order a cabinet too right?

Update: I think the shipment is being recalled. Tracking shows that it's at my local hub, but is going back to the west coast.

Oh well.

Not sure. I called up and have no idea what's going on.

Tracking number didn't work, so I chatted with Amazon. Basically they said they couldn't help, and that they would send me an email saying the issue was resolved. They also couldn't tell me why an invoice or updated price was never sent to me.

I then called up the corporate HQ of the shipper. They "data entried" in my info and directed me to the regional hub to schedule delivery for tomorrow. I them talk to the guy at the hub, and he said that the item isn't there yet and that I should call back Wednesday.

I then check the tracking a while later and it works. It shows that the package is at the regional hub, and was unloaded on Friday. It also shows that booking is received, and pickup scheduled, and delivery estimated from the 6th to the West Coast.

I then posted here that I think it was recalled. Then, a while later I called up the regional office again. I asked about what's going on, they said that it was "data entried" (which I already knew), and then we scheduled delivery for tomorrow between 8am and 3pm.

So... now I'm hopeful again, but this is all very confusing.

The weight is also listed as 80lbs, which makes no sense. I was told to call up tomorrow at 9am for a more approximate delivery time.

Cool! I'm hoping for the best. I hope they're not delaying things to give time for it to get out of the hub and back to the west coast.

Did you see any intercept notes on the tracking info?

Thanks!

I asked why it said it was going back there, and if it was recalled, the guy said no.

I think it's just a mess because the tracking info had to be entered manually? Everyone I spoke to commented that the tracking code I was given seemed weird. It started with different letters, and had a bunch of zeros and then a single digit, so it's possible that tracking numbers rolled over and their system glitched.

It now says pickup in Seattle 11/29, and appointment set 15:00 Nov 30th. I'm pretty annoyed that the delivery window is 7 hours, but hopefully they'll give me a more accurate time tomorrow.

I'm going to ready a few bucks for tipping. I figure for $20, the driver might be willing to help me bring it upstairs. If not, I'll open it up and take the drawers out before taking the chassis up alone.

IF it really does arrive. I won't believe it until I see it in person. Or rather, I won't believe it until I see it in person and 30 days pass with nobody contacting me about it.
