I need to upgrade my SAE and Metric combo wrenches. im no brand snob, and just want something GOOD that will last. Ive got some garbage now that works, but...

whats the best quality/value going right now with the holiday sales? Wifey is going to buy me some for christmas, but I need to pick them.

ive used some of the Kobalt ones from Lowes and liked their feel, and heard the Duralast stuff from AutoZone is nice as well. the craftsman stuff is OK, and not ruled out either...

this is obviously not for me to make a living off of. hobbyist home garage type stuff.

thanks!

Ace HW has a killer deal on Gearwrench sets. You can get 6 pc sets for $10 after rebate. The rebate allows you to buy 1 SAE and 1 Metric.

Better hurry because the promotion ends today.

Even if you want conventional combo wrenches these make a great add on. They're Taiwan vs. China.

I like the wrenches from northern tool best for value. Right now they have their 34pc set on sale for $39.99. It includes metric & SAE in both standard and stubby's.

Next would be the Gearwrench non-ratcheting long pattern wrenches. You can get the 24pc SAE/metric set for $119.

Both Northern & Gearwrench are made overseas by Danaher (craftsman) and have the "Surface drive" box ends.

BTW: Danaher also makes the Kobalt wrenches you like.. The northern's are a lot like the Koblat's except they are full polished, a bit longer and come in many more sizes.

For great, non-ratcheting, affordable combo wrenches - i think the general consensus around here is either the Cman Pro (USA made) 13 pc set, or the similar Stanley (China made) set from walmart.

I personally have the Cman Pro sets, which I purchased from the Classified section here...haven't used my raised panel set since :)

Yea, the sale for those ends today.. They probably just updated the website. I've been back and forth all weekend as to whether or not to grab them. Obviously an awesome deal, just wish you could get reversible ones for a decent price. I'd rather not buy both..

I would say these Stanleys are the most for the money in the really cheap catagory. They have them in SAE as well.

It's still hard to beat the craftsman raised panel for the money but the USA made Craftman Pro put the tools on another level. You didn't say what the budget was so it's hard to say what to buy.

The Duralast are nice even though pricy for Taiwan. Still and excellant wrench. The Kobalt is about the same as a Craftsman Raised panel so if you are looking in that direction I would buy the Craftsman raised panel. You can cover a lot of sizes with a quality USA built wrench for very little money. Just depends on your budget

Basic combo wrenches are my main goto tools, used more than anything else, so I bought the best I could find, used Snapon.

I think everybody has said the Craftsman Pro wrenches are no longer US m,ade unless you find old stock in the store? The new sets are china made with the US price

The OP didn't mention a budget. I would recommend the 43 piece SAE and Metric 12 point combination wrench set from Sears. I have this set and love it. Right now it's $180:

It's a very good, very complete set...

If I was buying a first set of wrenches, this is the set I would get also. One purchase and you're covered.

I have the Bahco set linked to earlier and they're top notch. I got them at one of those traveling tool shows for ~$20.
