Does anyone have any tips for using brake bleeders?

I have this HF pneumatic bleeder
http://www.harborfreight.com/brake-fluid-bleeder-92924.html

And I also have a manual bleeder like this;
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002KM5L0/?tag=atomicindus08-20

But I am unable to get these bleeders to actually move the fluid through the system and out of the caliper. Any help is appreciated.
I have the Motive unit and haven't run into any issues.

Can you clarify your last sentence? Are you not able to build pressure or even with pressure the fluid is not being purged/pushed? If the latter, are you able to bleed by pedal method?

you may have a **** load of junk in the brake lines too... if you are running abs- disconnect all the lines from the block (four corners) and blow some air through them (don't forget to open the valves on the calipers)... make sure the line from the m/c to the block is clean too... I've run into issues w/ major sludge buildup in brake lines due to years of owner neglect.

Another not so common problem that I have run into is a collapsed rubber brake hose between the frame and caliper. No signs on the outside but the inside was collapsed to the point that the fluid would not pump through.
