OK,
You guys have done it to me. I found a Parker Vise on CL for $25. I like Parkers and was excited with the thought it might be in good shape (it was). When I got there he had some other tools. I bought a couple of small oil cans and then saw a small bag of 7 wrenches. A couple of Williams and some other names I didn't recognize. He wanted $7 and took $6. Now I see one has Proto in very small letters. Any of the others good? What's the worth of these?

Damn...........I'm hooked!

Actually, all those look pretty good, except for the companion.

Gray is a high-quality brand from Canada.

Challenger by Proto isn't made anymore. Basically, Blackhawk replaced challenger as Proto's value brand. However, they still have a lifetime warranty through Proto.

Williams is a high-quality industrial brand now owned by Snap-On.

Wright is a very nice industrial brand. In fact, it's one of my favorites. It's a shame someone ruined that wrench. But you see ruined wrenches all the time. A flea market I go to has a really nice Cornwell combo wrench--except it's had the box end very similarly ruined.

Companion was Sears' value brand. They have no warranty and were recently replaced by the evolve line. Generally they were imported and cheap.

Thanks a LOT guys..........way to dissuade me from tool collecting! I'm sitting here wishing I had some more places to go where people are selling boxes full of tools that they have no idea what they are. I'm starting to go through withdrawal.........I need a tool fix!

Oh, NO!!! You're HOOKED!! Quick, try to find a good psychologist, or a beautiful wealthy young wife who loves *** but HATES tools. Otherwise, you'll end up just like the rest of us tool junkies.

Sorry, young man. But NICE SCORE!

I love the way the Parker vise is engineered. It is elegant. Here is a patent for the vise:

Here is a patent for the attached wrench that many Parkers have. Another example of the detailed engineering it has. There is also a screw in the end of the nut that the handle slides through. When this screw is tightened, it keeps the handle from falling down when you rotate it.

I got a set of Challenger wrenches for Christmas when I was about 12 years old, I'm still using them 40-some years later. :) They're good tools.

Dang talk about beginners luck:thumbup:

This Board and its members got me interested in the idea of even looking for anything other than the HD wrenches I already have. So when I saw this guy was selling his Dads old tools, and there were some wrenches in a bag.............well I had to look at them. There were a couple of Williams..........and I knew the name from posts here, so I figured even if the others were all just users for home work, that $6 wouldn't be a big loss.

He's got a bunch of punches and files and saw blades and hex wrenches and a couple sockets. Maybe I should go back........

Super sweet vice great score

Don't be looking for Parkers in the Detroit area. I'm hoping to find them all........:bounce:

The reason this one didn't go real quickly was because it was listed as a Vice, spelled with a "c". Most people search for them spelled with an "s". Gave me a chance to grab it. I've go 6 Parkers now, up to a #157 6". Looking for an 8"!

I am truly jealous. I found a couple Williams S wrenches last weekend for a song, but there are some 13/16 and larger in a set of 3, along with a single Proto wrench that they are asking $18 for the four wrenches.

You made off like a bandit!
