Hello Visers,

First: I'd like to wish all a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. Thanks for keeping an informative and addictive thread going.

Second: Pictured here is an ENCO 4" drill vise that I bought for work 20 years ago. For a Taiwan made vise, it's well made and tight, unlike HF & Chinese Wiltons. The only repair I had to make was to replace all the cheap fasteners with grade 8 bolts.

it took us a while to realize that alot of tools from Waiwan were not that bad. I had a drill press and it ran great.

Nice vise! Can I assume that you made it? I'm also impressed by the Kennedy boxes in the picture. Those are my personal favorite tool chests and cabinets.

You're 50 miles north of me. I'll agree about the cabinets as far as the casters go but I've never had any issues with anything else in over 30 years. With a set of adaptor plates and a little time in the scrap bin at work, the caster problems are quickly solved. In the picture below, I had to reenforce the Versa-Cart cabinet area where the vise is mounted.

Could this be a Wilton?

I got this vise from Chicagoland CL for $45 before Christmas.
It says "Made in USA" on it and has a few other markings but no brand name. Could this be a lower end Wilton? Anyone knows?
This weighs about 42 pounds, has 5 inch jaws. Near mint shape. Paint looks original.

It definitely appears to be a Wilton. I believe that model came with a sticker on the side that said "Wilton" on it. The paint is not original as the anvil would never be painted.

Thank you very much! A sticker with "Wilton" on it would explain its origin. The anvil shows some hammer marks under the paint.

Nonetheless it is a nice American-made vise in great condition :D

My first post to this thread, but have been watching it for awhile, scored these today for free :bounce:, time to restore the Morgan and move my import to the welding bench
First is a Morgan Vise Co. Chicago Ill., No360, 6", weighs 155 lbs.
Second is a CHAS PARKER CO. No. 824, 4", weighs 85 lbs.
Can anybody date these? also missing the reversing collar:mad: on the Parker, anybody have a vise that is unrepairable and willing to sell the collar?

You definitely ****! I've been chastised for saying it before, but that Morgan is missing a swivel base. Sweet score, nonetheless.

I've got a couple Parkers that I don't need, but they're all in good shape - you can buy an entire one if you'd like :D

I see, does any body have a swivel base? yea right!
Oh well, it will still do for my needs.
Good news as I was breaking it down to cleanup and discovered it has a two piece fixxed jaw, it swivels, just painted up tight.
Have it broken down degreased and sand blasted, I'll get some pics. in the morning.
Any body know the orginal color or colors, seemed Orange fixxed jaw side and the same orange over yellow on moving jaw? sound right?

I've read that Morgans were all originally blue. There's no paint left on mine, but I'm leaning towards some "New Holland" blue as soon as it's warm enough to paint again.

This vise is for sale in my area. Can anyone tell me anything about it. This is the photo from the ad.

The seller is asking $200 for it. Is it worth that much?

I have asked the seller for some details but he hasn't got back to me yet.

That handle looks awfully thin for that large a vise. My bet is that it's Chinese and worth closer to $2.00.

I'll take my guess. It kinda looks like an omega or allied vise. Made in Taiwan or china? Price is too high for me.

Record 3VS vise, 4" jaws, 36 lbs in weight. Looks pretty and is beefy, but the workmanship is a little less than what I expected out of Record. Such as the bottom surface of the vise that interfaces to the swivel is not machined flat but is as-cast.

If memory serves the early Record vises are labeled "Made in England". The current Irwin made ones from China are not labeled. I wonder if the "Sheffield England" ones are English made but after Irwin bought them? Don't know. This one is about 8 years old.

For comparison here is an old Record No. 3 that I own (non swivel base). I'm not certain of the age but I have a No. 4 that I bought new in the 70's and it's very similar. This one works great and will be easy to restore. You are right, the older ones have "Made in England" on them.

That's a nice family picture. What type of workbench is that? I need a heavy duty metal workbench and that one looks to be adjustable.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve;

Sorry I don't have a better picture of my work bench. The ones below show a bit of it and I hope they help. It's 10' long and is based on old pallet rack peices - about 7' long by 30" deep. I also have a 4' version of the same bench. I cut down the vertical end peices so the fully assembled bench is 36" high. After I put the pallet rack peices together (2 vertical peices & 2 horizantal peices) I layed 2"x10" lumber on top then a 1/4" sheet of plywood just to tie the wood peices together (nothing pretty). The top is 1/8" steel sheet - 10' feet long x 30" deep with a 4" backsplash and a 4" downward lip at the front. I have 3 inexpensive roller cabinets (w/o casters) underneath for tool storage. There is about a 16" over hang on each end which provides convenient spots for my stool and spot welder.

If you can pick up a small amount of pallet racking to make a bench out of I highly recommend it. It is incredibly strong and rigid, has lots of open space underneath for storage and it can be put together or taken apart in minutes. Except for the cabinets, I might have $100 into this bench (... with a little scrounging) and like for a lot of guys, it's the "foundation" of my workshop.

Stew

Just wanted to say thanks for all the info posted here. I just picked up a new in the box Wilton 450-S with brass jaws for 50% of the lowest price I could find on line to replace my old Columbia.

Ok vise fanatics. I got a wilton 450 w/o the swivel base and thought I would see if anyone had a swivel base that they don't need and would be willing to sell for a reasonable price. I have another Wilton with a swivel base and can make one w/o too much trouble, but like most things it will end up taking far more time than it seems it should. Everything is simple at first glance. So, if I can buy one; I might.
Second, I think the original finish was some kind of metalic blue hammertone paint. Anyone know of a rattle can paint that's close. If not, it'll probably end up utility grey

My husband uses a vise like this in his brother's motorcycle shop. All they know is that it was made in Poland and is quite a workhorse. They have used it for over 30 years. My husband is looking for one for his shop. Anyone have one for sale?
