Hello. This is my first post on this great site. I just moved into a new house in Colorado Springs. It's got a lot of character. Sort of like a modern craftsman if that makes any sense. The garage is unfinished, so it's a clean slate. I'd like to insulate and then cover with some kind of wood. Maybe something recycled for character.

I haven't decided on any other elements yet, but probably a combination of low and high storage, and again, something with character. Fixtures and lighting will be top quality.

I can't find any examples of the wood sided look in the gallery. I wouldn't know where to start looking.

This would be my first real home project. Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Can you think of any examples of what type of wood you are thinking off? And is the garage gonna be something that you are gonna use as more entertainment, or actual work?

I grew up in that area, and kinda miss it, my mom still has a house off of 31st near the garden of the gods.

Yeah, I just moved back and missed it too. I'm way north near Fox Run park, just south of Baptist Road.

I am not sure so I am still looking for examples of what's floating around in my head. I just want to use wood rather than the boring sterile white stuff. This will be more of a standard garage. I don't want much clutter because we need it for parking. In fact, I will be installing a storage lift on one side in order to squeeze in my 911SC and BMW 2002.

If you want a correct period look,
I would go with number 2 (even 3) 1 x 6 pine boards put on horizonaly.
At that time garages were just a sheltered parking spot.
If you can find old stuff to recycle, fine.
But even new will age within 2 or 3 years to a somewhat medium golden brown.

This sounds interesting.

I used OSB (Oriented Strand Bosrd) on mine and painted it a light color to help with lighting in the shop (30'X40'X12'high). I also used it on the ceiling. It is cheaper than plywood of the same thickness. It is great for hanging items on the wall and for protecting from the dings that you get with drywall.

If you are looking for unique and recycled, try to find some wood silos in your area. Often times they can be had for cheap to nothing just to remove them. I would face plane the staves and place them horizontal part way up the wall as in wainscoating. If you can find some and are extra ambitious, they are thick enough to resaw and then face plane the inside cut. You will get twice the coverage this way.

I have torn down or salvaged 7 silos. All were either douglas fir or yellow pine. Price ranged from free to $375. Used them for flooring and exposed roof decking in my cabin in the Adirondacks of NYS.

Well I'd love to find an inexpensive source of recycled/reclaimed wood. Unfortunately, the Springs is a fairly material-savvy area, so doubt I will stumble upon a cheap stack of it anywhere. I'm not giving up though. Other than that, the 1"x6"x?' pine planks laid horizontally sound like a good alternative. Also, since my garage has a deeper side for a work area, I could decide to go with two different types of wall coverings. Maybe some metal siding to mix it up a little.

Anyway, I'm just fishing for ideas right now. I can't get serious until another month or two. Since I have the luxury of a blank slate with this garage, I'm going to add in some extra electrical outlets and good lighting. I'm really looking forward to this. It's my first house that I'm actually proud to own.
