The catalog is marked 1950 and I would assume that they started making these about this time as they mention that it is a new design. They probably continued into the mid 50's or a bit later. I would have to find another catalog to pin it down.

These jacks were far from perfect as the rear wheels frequently went bad on them and the frames could also crack too if put under too much of a load.

Later jacks become quite mundane looking with nothing special about them at all.

Thats just about the coolest looking jack I've ever seen!
I think you are dating it correctly as my '47 catalog does not show that model.
Nice resto too!

oldjacks,

I don't know where to begin exactly, I've been looking for information on this model jack for almost a year! :willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil.

Totally awesome brochure!! I always thought the saddle on mine was silver but couldn't really confirm it. My painter friend was trying to talk me into painting the lettering silver, but I wasn't sure about it until I saw this.

It's also very interesting to me that there was a version of this jack available as an SJ-18R. I heard from an older gentleman at a local hydraulic shop that this model was available with rubber wheels and was used on showroom floors. This brochure obviously backs up his story!! Great stuff!!

And, not only do you show us an awesome brochure, but you top it off with a pic of your great looking jack to boot!!!

Thank You for posting this info....it really made my day!!

Many old jacks had the option of rubber wheels. My question would be has anyone ever seen a jack equipped in this manner? I know I never have. They probably would run very quietly on the ground but be much harder to push around.

Hello Old jacks, very nice jack. Do you have another? I would trade the weaver in a hot second:thumbup:

I am sure we will find a deal one of these days but as for this jack it would have to be a mighty big trade to be able to move this jack to a new home.

I can't say that I have seen any older floor jacks with anything but metal wheels.

As for newer floor jacks, AC models use a plastic wheel with a rubber o'ring.

Yes, As does OTC in the Spanish 5202. Great idea, old or new.
When we got it a couple years ago, my kids future fancyass epoxy floors were not a thought but I'm glad we aren't dragging steel wheels over it now.
They hold up well too and don't seem to leave any marks.

Was the totem display actually in stores?

That would be a hard question to answer as Jack dealerships are few a far between... as today and probably then to. All this imported stuff we see at every tool store was definitely not the norm in the 1950's.

Hello I am starting to restore a sj-18 and am missing some of the parts that lower the jack. Do you know where to find parts? (I'm doubting it but I thought I would ask) I'm a machinist so I can make new ones but I would like to find someone kind enough to loan some of my missing parts so I can measure them and duplicate.
Thanks Brad

As of yesterday, I made a deal on an sj18 and was surprised to find that it does have the rubber coated wheels!
