how does it work? I notice that it says automotive or technical training school. I am currently a full time student in Industrial maintenance at york technical college. Do i qualify for this program and what exactly is it and what do you qualify for? My school has discounts with Fluke and Klein but i was wondering how this snap on program works. Thank you for any info.

The discount is quite generous, 50% off list or there about if i remember correctly on most of their catalog. Just a small disclaimer, and i'm not saying you would do this, but as tempting as it may be its not meant to be abused for resale purposes.

I also wouldnt go crazy into debt, which is probably what they want, stocking up either. Spend what money you actually have and dont neglect your school loans in favor of truck tools either. Remember you may not like the field you end up in after a couple years or it may simply change due to demand. It happens a lot.

actually its %48 off most items
the school has to be one recognised by snap on through their industrial rep.
there are alot of things at the whim of the industrial rep. for example, you cannot buy a whole bunch of any one item as they will trigger that you may be wanting to sell some of them for some profit.
the school does not get as good of a discount as the students do....weird huh?
also, snap on wants to come in on the first day or so and give a sales pitch and sign the students up for the discount program so they know who should be getting a discount

It's like a crack dealer giving you the first hit off the pipe on credit at 1/2 price.

When I went to college, the program was limited to the tools on the school's required tool list. There were 2 choices for toolbox (I don't remember what they were). The tools were purchased through an industrial sales representative.

I had no problem getting the discount on tools that weren't on the school's tool list. Obviously there are limitations, i couldn't buy a Modis for half price. I did get the 1/2" cordless impact for like $350.

I don't think the toolbox options were very good. I remember them being entry level boxes that I realized I'd outgrow quickly. I ended up using the discount on tools only and bought a 40" kobalt box. It filled up quickly and I made due until I got a great deal on a KRL722.

What tool box options were you given?

They have quite a variety on the student site now, includes various colors of the KRA2411, KRA2306, Classic 36" series, Heritage 40" series, Heritage 26" series, as well as lots of their shop carts and road chests.

You can cruise the student site but can't see prices/order unless you have a login.

Just don't buy a Classic 96 box expecting to turn around and sell it for a profit on craigslist or whatnot.

its a joke.

I bought what was at the time the biggest tool set they had which was sockets ratchets screwdrivers and misc tools in 3 drive sizes for around 2,171 dollars.

Then about a year later i went on the snap on truck and gave the guy the same part number, and he looked it up and it was the same price 2,171. He then said if i was buying that much he would give me 100 or so off, so it was actually more expensive to go with the student discount.

My suggestion.... buy used.

I used it when I was a student, and the most important thing to remember is to check on the main website and see what the regular price is. Buyer beware some deals are better than others, but I heard a newbie at our shop say an F80 is like $40!!!

...and how long ago was that. I am guessing quite a long time ago because $2171 does not buy a very big set with todays prices.

I enjoy the discount I get through Matco tools for being an educator in a community college tech ed program. I teach a few machining classes in the evenings aside from my 'real' job, enjoy the heck out of it, and get a really good discount on some of the tools I use to boot. Can't beat helping others learn new skills and getting some really nice tools for a great price!

2 ways to go about the program: through your industrial rep. or through the SO student website. My experience is that if you go through the website, you will be limited on what you can/cannot order, and that prices are higher than they are through the rep.

If you go through the rep.:

there are alot of things at the whim of the industrial rep.

This about sums everything up... But, as a current tech. student, participating in the program, I will clarify... Its ENTIRELY up to your local industrial rep.

My industrial rep. seems to offer everything I have asked for at 45% of retail--so 65% off. Of course, I've not shopped for air tools or diagnostic tools and expect that these, if available to students, would not have such a high discount. As for toolboxes, my rep told me that it is technically limited to KRA models, but that he could could slip a few KRLs in each years. Interestingly, one of my local SO franchisees BEAT the industrial reps. price on a KRL though a special promo, so I went with the local guy.

I'll also add that my industrial rep is a bit of an ***. I'm convinced that he makes a ton more money off of Air Force contracts, and that he believes students a PITA. But its hard to beat his prices!

I'm a student in the local Machine Tool Technology (manual machining, CNC, etc) program at a local tech college. I work as a tractor mechanic for a large trucking company.

I signed up for the student program via the website. I was approved within a day or two, if I recall. I've been happy with the pricing and availability on the website. Local SO guy sells the MG725 for $433 or so. It can be purchased via the student program for $377, with a set of impact sockets.

The 36" striking prybar I ordered is sitting in the local UPS depot, to be delivered tomorrow. ~$50 through the site, and $108 (plus tax) off the truck.

first, Matco has the best student discount program, period.

on hard line hand tools, Snap On student discount is average 40-45% off +tax, free shipping. you can pick what ever the tools(single or set), if it's not listed on the student discount program site, you have to go through their rep. the rep is not a dealer, he/she is a Snap On employee. my rep is a super nice guy but I still have to prove I'm a FULL TIME student before I can order.

I spent about $7000 on tools in the past couple years, only $400 on Snap On student program, not even a penny on a dealer. I still got better deals on ebay and auction, even GJ classifies. I personally don't care tools are shinny and new or dull and used. I use them don't polish them.

bought most of my stuff from the Matco rep. didn't buy much from SO, and was really disappointed to learn that Cornwell didn't even have a student program :( . if i remember right the SO rep came about 3 times per semester, took tool orders, and shipped them to the school, without us filling out any paperwork. really good deal for beginning tech's.

It's totally true. When you've never used really nice tools you don't know what you're missing out on. Then you also realized if you're gonna spend a ton on tool-truck tools, you might as well get them from SO cause you know they will still be in business if you're tool breaks and you want to exercise that excellent warranty 20 years from now.

What the guy told us at our school was in the end everything averages out to around half off. I found that mostly true. IIRC the discount is only good for something like $6K, but i'm not sure about the exact number, and i'm not sure about whether that number applies to how much you actually pay, or for the retail value.

Honestly i'd suggest waiting until you're almost done with school to buy stuff from them. That's what i did and it turned out great. It takes quite a while to realize where you really should spend your money, what tools you need SO quality in, etc. I know had i spent the money i did at the very beginning of school rather than the end, i would have probably would ended up with a much worse collection and have spent more.

I think the most important things to buy from SO are things like ratchets, breaker bars, pry bars, pliers, locking impact extensions. The kind of things you use the most, and the kinds of things where the extra quality makes a very large, noticeable difference.

Cornwell actually does have a student discount program. They had fliers at my school detailing the program, unfortunately it appeared to be the most bothersome to order from.

I have the SO student package right here. I've looked it over quite a bit. To me it looks like the discount is anywhere from 30% to 60%. No way I would sign up for one of their hand tool packages. They are just too limited and I already have most of the stuff anyway. I will try to order some individual tools and sets. There is a pretty good selection of boxes, and what looks to be deep discounts. I've not priced any of these things with a dealer or online though.

BTW the limit on purchases is $6500.

I probably won't get to utilize this program, as I am only a part time student and SO requires you to be full time to participate in this program. Oh well, I'll just take my business elsewhere.

I've utilized the Mac student program on several occasions. Mac has no limitations on what you can get or which students can get it. You get half off anything out of their catalog. Hell, I even ordered a KD serpentine belt tool kit out of the KD catalog on the MAC truck and got half off, delivered to my door for free. Anything you can order through your MAC dealer you can get half off with free shipping. I've spent thousands with them, and I have the tools that I wanted from them. Not what they think I need.

that discount would have saved me a lot of money on tools. our dealer told us that there was no program because of the size of the Cornwell company, and that they just could not offer the same discounts as the big 3. so they make up for it with service. of course, things may have changed since then.

They mainly target the automotive field. But they do have an HVAC and electrician package. You being an industrial mechanic probably won't need any metric tools. Honestly I've never really seen an electrician use any tool truck tools. They mostly get their stuff from sears. Hey, sears has a student program, 20% off in store. Also NAPA 40 % most things in store.

Sorry for 3 posts in a row, I don't know how to consolidate them.

You don't have to buy packages. You can buy individual tools as well. That's how i bought all of my stuff though them. All I had to do was get the stock #'s of what i was interested in, E-mail the guy, then he would return a quote, then i would make my final order.

What tool box options were you given?

classic 78 was the biggest one i could get and i got it for a little over 2k and a $400 gift certificate with it. So I pad about 1600 bucks for a brand new box that costs 5k.

Oh yeah........ It's $2,499.00 and you get a $400 gift card up here. My bad I overlooked that. Is that a price you got online? Are they just bypassing the gift card?

Yeah, once I log-in, thats the price that shows up. Dont know about the gift cards.
I have a student account with SO and Matco. I've been wanting to order a few matco 88 ratchets for awhile now, but since I've picked up my first roto-ratchet a few months ago, it has become the first and only one that I grab. Works fantastic in every situation.

Interesting, I don't have one YET but I never would've thought it'd be the goto ratchet. Maybe I need to hurry up and get one.:bounce: Hey can you view the Matco monthly fliers anywhere online? We don't have a Matco dealer here right now. But someone told me they have a killer ratchet buy one get one deal going on this month. And I couldn't find it anywhere.

The link has the monthly deals for Jan, login for student prices. Link Haven't heard about a buy 1 get 1 ratchet deal, but let us know if you find it. LOL on second thought I really should stop buying ratchets, but I can't stop. The 88 matcos are simply awesome. Used my full polish 88 everyday for the last 6 months, thin profile, high tooth, very comfortable, defiantly want another on or two:thumbup:

My instructors just told me today that the snap on industrial rep sent them an email. They put in a good word, so hopefully my account will be approved soon. For those wondering, I am a full-time student majoring in auto/diesel technology.

Matco sends me monthly emails but it's all student specials. My local matco dealer is suppose to be dropping off the latest flyers and a catalogue by the end of the week. Haven't heard about the 88 ratchet deal but the 8" 3/8 with colored grip is 35 bucks with student discount :bounce:

Yeah let me know what you find out. I was told it was a 10 or 11 inch 3/8" ratchet (not flex) w/ rubber handle on sale for $65 and you get a free 1/4" ratchet. I assume it's an 88th, looking through the site the only rubber ones are 88th. That's all I was told by my friend, and I just said "yeah get me that". So we'll see.....................
