Absolutely. When two people are working in the shop, or when I've got one vise ******* holding something and need to tweak on something else.

Should of noted, not including someone else using one.

I have 5 vises: 2 woodworking vises mounted on my woodworking bench, a 3" vise on the lower section of a tool chest that serves as my roll-around tool cart, a 5" on my welding table, and a 6" on one of my workbenches. Don't know if all 5 have been "occupied" at the same time, but I certainly don't think I can get by with any fewer. And I'm always on the lookout for a deal on another one!

I have 2 vises directly across from each other on different workbenches and sometimes i use 1 as a pulling point with a come-along.

Holy ****, you just managed to convince me i need another vise :lol_hitti, i can actually think of alot of cases where i would do this. Maybe without a come along just with a rope.

I'll use two sometimes when I'm replacing a part or something that requires transferring pieces such as fittings and stuff from the old unit to the new.The new part goes in one vice and the old part goes in another vise, both clamped the same way. When I remove a fitting from one I can go directly to the other and make sure it's in the right port and clocked correctly on the new one.Saves trying to remember which piece goes where.

I've used two vices on a milling machine to hold long stock. I have a one on my workbench and one on a stand for welding, one lives on the drill press and several on the shelf for the mill. You can never have too many tools!!!!!

Of course you need another vise! What a silly question...

I was just trying to add up how many vises I have, and I stopped counting at 7. Several of them are woodworking vises that might not 'count' to many on this board, but I also have an old Craftsman 4" that I use for anything and everything, plus a nice Record Mechanics Vise (that I still haven't used) from over a decade ago. And, like others here, I'm still on the prowl for a good old giant vise.

CR*P. I have 3. I'm actively trying NOT to acquire more than 3. You guys are not helping.

I have all 3 mounted on a 9 ft bench. 2 are in one corner, exactly 90 degrees angled. This has been useful for holding corners together. The other is in the middle, 5 feet away, used combined with the other for holding really long pieces.

I guess number 4 could be made 'portable'. Number 5 could be mounted onto the toolbox. Number 6 could be put on the bedside table.

Aside: how the heck am I a senior member with only 104 posts and only 3 vises. Instead of counting posts, I think we should count vises.

I think I have four. One on the main bench, a second that I'm getting ready to mount (in case I need to work on something long... like pipe). A third in the woodworking shop and a little bitty one that is in my Wife's Great Grandfather's watchmaking bench in the dining room. The stuff in there is so tiny that I just sit and stare at it. Have you EVER seen drill bits that are 4/1000 of an inch in diameter???? Oh, and there's a lathe with chucks to use it with....

I was going to say that I have 3, two on the bench and one on a heavy stand, Then comes to mind the 4 milling machine vises, Oh yea 3 or 4 drill press vises, a couple of hand vises and some pin vises, and probably some I've forgotten. How can a man get by with just one or can you even call yourself a man if you don't have one? I supose that if you have not a good vise you can always read literature. ;)

I've found that both vises and vices seem to come in groups, maybe a more correct comparison than some of us want to realize. wants and needs are all relative really. That being said, I think I have at least 15 vises and probably more vices than I care to admit.

I've often had something like my motorcycle engine tieing up a vice and needed a second one. An engine stand would solve that problem but I know there's been other situations.

1 vise = just getting by
2 vise's = pair, now you have a vise to hold the vise you are repairing/refurbishing
3 vise's = alternatives, now you can work on more than one vise at a time
4 vise's = now your wife can have one too!
5 vise's = you could loan one to a neighbor, NOT
6 vise's = now we're getting some where
7 vise's = a Gaggle
8 vise's = a octa-clamp-a-thon
9 vise's = a sickness
10 vise's = nearing Nirvana

Do vise grip's count?
