Vacuums!!! the built in kind

When I built my garage I plumbed it with household size central vac pipe and outlets.

I don't do much if any woodworking, just sucking up metal dust and all the other types of dust. What type of vacuum should I look to get? Are there any of the household type units that are more heavy duty? I would consider a dust collector type setup but I am worried that it might not provide as good of suction. Any ideas? The vacuum is plumbed up to the attic, will that create any problems with lift?

A home style central vacuum system plumbed in using 2” PVC pipe with tight bends may have issues sucking larger volumes of material as metal or saw dust. Their design is only meant for picking up smaller amounts of dirt from carpet and hard surfaced floors.

I know, I learned from experience. Over time lines that were not frequently used got totally clogged with dust that had settled in them. Much like compressed air line system, all the drops need to be first run up 10” from the main runs to prevent this.

Unless the power unit is SpencerAir Turbine or equivilent with an outside discharge the system is nothing but an entertainment device.

If you used the 1.25" plastic line do a little sketch on paper and see how little air you can move thru that hole. I have a Spencer in the cellar with 2" pipe to the outlets and 2" hose, and that SUCKER is powered by a 2.5hp 3Ø motor spinning a pair of 16" wheels at 3600rpm. It discharges to the outside of the house. When it's running either a door or window needs to be open to make up the air discharged.

Even with all that going for the system I still PIG the lines once a year to clear buildup of feline fur and other ****.

I vacuum my dog (Doberman Pinscher) with my Dyson and the stair tool attachment - partially mitigates having to vacuum fur off the floor and carpets... But it's my cats that shed the big fur, can't vacuum them unfortunately and would probably need a 20-gal shop-vac for them anyways.

You have 3 phase at your house?
What kind of computer do you have that has a "phase" symbol on it?
You have what I want :bounce:

Of course I have 3Ø in the house. Had it since 1966.

All computers have Ø on them, you just gotta find the right key. I could tell ya where it is, but then I'd have to shoot ya. Gas is too expensive to do that.

OK, so the cats are highly nervous when the **** machine is running. Minor inconvenience to me, besides the cat stops when you get to their ****. They don't squeeze down like gerbyls do.
Actually, since Lawn Nazi is getting a little older she wants a smaller hose. I may have to buy a box of hose and make her one.

I don't like vacums and metal dust. Despite the filters it seems to get to the motor and mess things up.

I use magnets. The trick is to wrap a paper towel around the magnet before you start. Then you can just turn it inside out over you trash can and drop it in with the chip wrapped up inside..

I have even taken to wrapping a magnet in a towel and setting it close to the hole mark when I use my drill press. The chips just jump to it as they come off the drill bit. Very little clean up.

Count your blessings! My powco won't give it to me even though there is 3 phase on the pole where my ****** hangs from. Those other 2 trannys would bankrupt them I guess.
Thanks for the help on finding the "phase" symbol.:dunno:

Is that the same Malibu who built a 2 axel car hauler a while back on a welding board?

Hey, you found it almost the same way I did, and because it took effort you won't forget it.

3Ø doesn't require 3 transformers, only 2. Now if you really want to piss the PoCo off, demand to buy your power at primary and install your own transformers.

All I had to do to get mine was haul in a sawmill with a 50hp single phase motor. The neighbors were already screaming about their TV picture disappearing every time the 20hp air compressor fired up. Sometimes, even with friends at the PoCo you gotta make your point the hard way.
Good thing they didn't ask if I really intended to run the sawmill, and I damn sure didn't volunteer that information.

Ahhhhh yes, I thought your name sounded familiar. I did/do frequnt some welding boards and others. I never built any trailers though, must have me confused someone else.
The one time over 10 years ago that I was considering a piece of 3Ø eqipment and did not want to "bothered" with a phase converter I spoke to the powco. I never specifically asked them about Y versus Delta (2 or 3 trannys) they just shot me down saying the largest service they would give me, a residental address, was 120/240V 400A (320 continuis) 1Ø. I never pushed it at all.
I like your creative way of getting the service you needed

Were I near Colemans, I'd ride over and see what he has. 4 years ago I had a 20" turbine unit I couldn't give away to a new home, and all it needed was to change out the motor to single phase.

Let me look in some catalogues. Powrflit's site don't seem to contain all their paper catalog does, and I'm pretty sure they have a couple units available for central that are real units, not recased homeowner suckboxes.

You would be surprised to learn how much those transformers actually cost.

Oh, I do know what trannys cost
But I don't care: Just like they don't care what rates they charge me.
Wait, they do care about what they charge me. They can only charge as much as the PUC lets them. :moon:
