Evening all from a site newbie!!!

I am looking at insulation my expanded gargage and was thinking of using TigerFoam kits vice traditional insulation.

Thoughts ideas???

I want the R value in addition, and I think that the spray foam is better in the long run.

From what I have read with the spray foam, you do not need the air gap as with regular insulation.

Anyone know any other tips or tricks to working with this stuff??

Thanks for the assis!!

First, I haven't used this product.
It does look pretty expensive @ about 3X the cost of Dow rigid foam on a per inch basis. The R value of the TigerFoam is 6-7 and Dow ~ 5.5-6 per inch thickness. I guess it would depend on where you plan to use it in your build and how well you could control the foaming process to fill to the desired thickness but not overfill and end up throwing trim scrap away at more than a dollar a board foot. If you would use it to fill stud spaces - how thick would you apply it? I used a lot of Dow rigid foam in my shop build and left no gaps, in fact, I glued all non T&G edges with Dow Corning Mastic 111.

I'm sure that the R value reported is for an optimum cell size (generally about 1 mm diameter yields the best R value) I wonder how good the quality control will be for this home brew kit.

Steve,
Thanks for the assist. Is the Dow Rigid foam a Home Depot/Lowes product?

My use is for the garage expansion that I have in progress. Initial attached imation garage was 20x20; expanded to 26x30. Have the new roof and the new walls that I want to insulate and I plan on using the garage in the winter as I wil lpark the bass boat I have in there.

I have normal 2x4 stud walls and 2x10's (12 on center) for the roof.

Thanks again for the assist!

Not all Lowes and HD stores carry the same products, so if I find it here doesn't mean you will have it where you are. I hadn't checked our local stores lately but a quick search of Lowes for my store (ZIP 48642) shows it but says to check store for availability. It says $13.26 for 1/2" 4'X8' (HIGH $$). I think you will be able to buy 1" thick material for less than that in quanity - check around at lumber yards. Here is the description from the Lowes site for the 1/2" board;

Styrofoam residential sheathing extruded polystrene insulation is a foam insulation board with plastic film on both sides
It offers superior R-value, moisture resistance and high compressive strength
Plastic film reduces job site damage to the insulation boards
Styrofoam residential sheathing is recommended for wall sheathing in residential applications
R value of R-3
Resistant to moisture
Easy to install
Can be used with any siding
Can be used below grade to insulate foundation or basement walls

Steve,
Thanks fr the time and the info! Decided to use a combo of the regular insulation and the foam board. The cost for the foam really was out of the budget.

Thanks again for the help!
