I just picked this up and was wondering how old it is.
The taps are nicely engraved, and not laser marked...rubs off.
I looked on the SO webpage and they show a TDTDM500A.
Is this the same set?
Who made the one I bought, and who makes the current version?

if all you're doing with it is cleaning threads it will suffice. For making brand new threads you'd be better off getting HSS but its big $$$$ compared to anything truck brands carry. Generally mechanics will only use rethreading tools so sets like yours are more than adequate.

I have this set under the Mac label.
It has been great for everything I have ran into as a general mechanic.
The pieces that have broke were my fault, mainly just getting in a hurry.

I have the same set under the MAC label. They are OK at best. I like the older Hanson super sets better

The snap-on, Mac, Matco are all made by Hanson/Irwin.

Note I said "OLDER Hanson Super set" The quality if the taps were a good bit better. The new sets work OK. I have no regrets buying mine but I had the Old Hanson super that were superior.

I have the same set, about 10 years old. Good set and when I break one, zero problems getting replaced. I have a comparable USA made craftsman set which I think is made by vermont american. Total junk, the taps break if I look at them funny and no warranty.

holy ****, I just checked the price on that set. I got a Matco version of the same set at an auction for $40, mission 4 small metric taps, that's all.

The super set was the one that came with the drill bits and extractors stored in the lid right?

its a consumer grade set but more than adequate for cleaning threads, and i certainly wouldnt buy the sets direct from any truck when you can get the sets direct under the manufacturers brand for substantially less.

According to the snap-on site they are.

Will Snap On warranty if anything breaks and if yes then for how long?

Sorry for the question as I purchased my SO kit as NOS and was not even thinking about warranty. Just wondering what the deals are going on this, stateside.

Thanks

Was using the search feature and came across this thread. I got a tdtdm500a but it doesn't come with the reverse drill bits in the lid. My managers set did. Does anyone have a part number I can order just the reverse drill bits from Henson/Irwin to complete my set!

Irwin 11119 is the set I have, it's 5 left handed drill bits and the accompanying spiral flute extractors.

Unless you sneak up on a set like those and steal them, your best bet is to juat go to Enco or MSC and select the few sizes that you really need in a USA name brand HSS and be done with it. They will last damn near forever if you take proper care of them.

Most of us go buy complete sets and then only use a few of them. Kinda nuts, really... unless you really dig sets or have too much money.
