Purchased a Stanley "91-930" 1/2 ratchet off the bay. Uppon opening the package I instantly noticed it was not "BRAND NEW" as advertised. After testing out the drive, I noticed something was broken inside. I opened the ratchet up and found the teeth to be completely trashed to the point where they were flaking off and the gear drive was the same way but also broken. Uppon further investigation I found the back of the ratchet reading "89-819" Anyways I've sent a message to the seller on the bay. Seller had a perfect feedback record with over 300.

Cliffs:

Not brand new (as advertised)
Chewed up teeth
Banged up chrome exterior
Busted gears
Wrong model

What to do?

Those shavings are the gears teeth... :eek7:

I'd first wait to hear back from the seller before you make any moves. Who knows, might be a simple misunderstanding that he will take care of. If he fails to remedy the situation, file a claim with eBay and get your money back.

If he is a good Ebayer, he will make it right. Everyone makes mistakes. Give him an opportunity to fix it. If he does nothing, then file a dispute.

If he's sold over 300 items with a perfect record, it seems unlikely that he'd start intentionally damaging that reputation now. I find it more likely that he mixed up to auctions, or placed the wrong ratchet into the wrong box. I think you did the right thing in contacting the seller first.

Thanks guys..I started a paypal dispute. Buyer contacted me back promptly and offered a full refund with no return. I'm sure it was a misunderstanding, just frustrating lol... Now I'm on the hunt again for a 1/2 ratchet. I don't wrench enough to justify that kind of money for a SO F80... Any other recommendations???

File a Paypal dispute now to begin the documentation process, you want to have the first word on file.

Contact the seller.

Start to accept, that no matter how this turns out, you're going to put more effort into attempting to resolve this, than you've saved by purchasing via Ebay.

My comfort handle Duralast is my favorite 1/2" ratchet that I own.
It's not a fine tooth ratchet, but it's still an excellent value.

They also make a standard metal handle version.

Craftsman thin profile ratchets also seem to be pretty nice, though I've never used one.

There is So many options out there for quality Ratchets today, and While its amusing to watch people argue here at GJ just glance thru Ebay and you will find some killer deals. I would personally buy from a company that has some tenure in the business and wont be gone Next year or replacing there current line up with ****.

I had one Duralast ratchet...It broke, I got it warrantied... MEH..

I don't understand the fanboy attraction for Duralast on this site.

No ratchet is industructable. Duralast is a lot of bang for the buck. It's like buying a 936 at 1/4 the price. Snap-On has a warranty for a reason, just like Duralast

Good to hear that things worked out in your favor, and so quickly at that.

A lot of us here at GJ have had good experiences with Cripe Distributing. (To be fair, some of us have had a bad experience with Cripe Distributing too. I suspect that they're the vocal minority in this case, though.) They've got the KD 731111 rhft for $15 + shipping. It's not my favorite ratchet, but it's definitely worth $15.

Of course there is Dualast that can be warrantied at any Autozone but there are other excellant choices like a Williams 936 style, Wright, SK (best so far but id something happens it may take awhile for a warranty) The Craftsman Pro (not the premium due to cost) or look for a nice used Snap-On. You chould be able to get into a high quality USA made ratchet for around 35 dollars.

This the craftsman you're referring to? http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10...rd=1/2+ratchet&prdNo=4&blockNo=4&blockType=L4

Of all the craftsman ratchets, that one appears to be their best... or no???

Thats the one but they have a new premium one thats nice but pricy.

Personally I wouldn't recommend the 1/2 version of the new Craftsman Premium Ratchet. There is too much play in it and sometimes when your not perfectly square on a fastener it will kind of grind a bit. I took the first one back and still had the same issue with the second one. The 1/4 and 3/8 versions are flawless though.

If your budget is still $10.25 you would be just as good to hit a flea market or Pawn shop.

$10 is the going rate for a 1/2 drive Craftsman ratchet in good condition at the flea markets around me.

You can find used S-K for these prices as well if you look.

I think something is wrong with your link mrholeshot.

Edit
Looks like they don't let you link directly to an item.
Search the part number and it comes right up.

So... nevermind.

Klutch,I'm not sure of you're location as you're profile isn't filled out, but if you're near enough to make the postage bearable, that SK 1/2 drive that NJHandyguy has available is a really nice ratchet, 10x the ratchet that a stanley will ever be!

Doesn't Stanley have a lifetime warranty?

yes they do, put that back together and mail your broken ratchet to

Stanley Tools
1000 Stanley Drive
Concord, NC 28027
Attn: Quality Assurance

or call 800-505-4648 M-F. Most likely they'll have you mail it to the above address anyway.

Just stick a note inside asking for it to be rebuilt or replaced because it "stopped working". You'll get a free replacement.

Might as well get a new as you have already gone through some trouble and it was what ratchet you wanted so just get a real new one.

That SK and Williams sure look nice. I've heard quite a bit of flack of craftsman on this board...and I do agree that their lower end ratchets are junk. But I'm still curious about that thin profile...I live less than 5 mins from local Sears, so it only makes sense to have craftsman sockets and wrenches, but I would appreciate the luxury of a nice feeling ratchet. :)

The Premium grade is a very nice ratchet, mine doesnt have any wobble as stated above by the first one i got was locked up completely. The 1/2" seem to be suffering the most from QC issues since the release a few months ago so just check it in the store before you purchase. Also its very heavy.

edit- oh you were referring to the thin profile. Also a very nice ratchet. Not nearly as expensive or as many issues as the premium grade. Still heavy.

Sorry to see you get hosed like this. If you want to PM me your address (as long as it's in the US) I'll drop this ratchet in the mail for you free of charge. It's nothing fancy but it's strong as hell and extremely smooth. Before anyone says anything, no I'm not the one that sold him the Stanley ratchet and no I'm not seeking anything in return. I found this at a garage sale for $1 and it was seized up with rust. I took it apart cleaned it and lubed it up with superlube. It's just a hobby for me and I already have several other 1/2 ratchets. Let me know if you are interested.
