Do you wear your wedding band?

Will a white gold ring scratch the paint or aluminum surfaces If not careful?

If I'm wearing Mechanix gloves I will. It depends. When I first got married, I wore it all the time, and it showed. When I weld, I always take it off. Now, if I can remember to take it off, I do, if not I don't. If I have to get another one made, it'll be titanium.

I have just a plain gold band, it is all scratched up but I planned that when I got it. If I have my hand in a tight area or if there is a chance I will get shocked then I take it off.

The problem with that is if you have had it on for several or more years it leaves a mark around your finger. It did on mine anyhow...mark is now gone........

Nope, Don`t even own one, I borrowed one to get married and the wife is ok with it ( she got a bigger ring and after 19 years she is used to it ) She knows I will not wear jewlery as it is dangerous with what I do for a living.

Very rarely will I take my ring off. It has a lot of meaning. As a matter of fact my original ring got moved to another finger when I gained a little weight and the wife bought me a new ring with a little larger diamonds. The first ring you could hardly see them and she wanted to get me a ring that you could make them out. That was for our 15 year anniversary. For our 5 year she bought me a ring with 5 small diamonds. So I have it on also. And the watch does not come off hardly ever. Without a watch, I am lost. I may not look at it hardly during the day (or can't remember I did) but let me leave the house without it and it's about the same feeling as leaving the house without your pants on. And it's the same with a billfold. Always carried one and can't function if it's not in my back pocket.

Actually, I USED to wear my watch and ring. Then when I saw a picture of a guy who had spanned a set of battery posts with a wrench accidently. The ring heated up and cauterized his finger to the bone. He lost the finger.

I showed the pics to my wife, and she now is very understanding of why I don't normally wear my ring when working on vehicles/welding.

Also on the same note, that's also why I have a plain gold ring, they scratch easier than platinum and titanium would have been cool too. Then the jeweler explained that if they ever have to take your ring off at the hospital, if you're wearing titanium, you're probably gonna lose the finger!!!

I've worn mine for 18 years. Only time it comes off is when it gets repaired. I've snagged it on nails several times, and broke it. Lucky the ring broke, not my finger. Around electrical, or sometimes machining, I'll take it off.

I'm lost too without my watch and billfold.

I was told in high school by my shop teacher to always remove a watch and any rings etc before working with machinery because of the danger of something hanging on it and pulling a finger off. BUT When I got married I told my wife I would never take off my wedding band. I Did industrial maintenance for 12 of the last 13 years. about 5yrs ago I was up on a ladder and I was drilling a hole in some cable tray it's like a trench for wires to lay in. I was up a little over 15' and when the drill went through the tray I lunged forward because It went through the metal easier than I thought. When I did the bottom of the ladder kicked out and I started to fall and like a cat I was clawing and grabbing at everything well I managed to catch the cable tray I was drilling through I still fell but my wedding ring hooked on the tray and tried to fillet my ring finger. It pulled the skin and meat back up to the first joint. I fell 15' and landed on my tail bone I was lucky to have my finger and and I couldn't walk to good for a few days and I also would not go up on anything high for over a year which cause problems with my job. But you know what to this day I still don't take my ring off although I do have a ridge from the accident in front of my ring that makes it really hard to remove my ring Of course now I only advise on maintenance issues since I am now a production supervisor and I don't figure I will get it hung on a keyboard key I wear the mechincs gloves when working on cars etc. Just me though.

I put mine on daily when going to work (desk jockey) and take it off when I get home at the same time I download all my pockets and change into home/real work clothes. If I am really working on cars or anything else yard etc. I do not want a wallet,watch,rings or anything else of that nature on; that would drive me nuts, in fact I could not sleep with a watch or a ring on. Aside from that I would never wear a ring while working on cars etc. for just the reason stated by bluesman

I just got married in July. Before we got married, we had the discussion of weather or not I would wear my wedding band. She obviously wanted me to. I work on small equipment but frequently use a lathe and on the weekends I am always working on a car or welding something.

To resolve the issue of me wearing a band, she bought me a necklace for Christmas that I wear the ring on when working. However, if I know that I am just going out to dinner or hanging out I will wear my ring on my finger.

I too looked into tungston carbide and all of the other hardened metals, the only thing that I didn't like is that they can't cut it off. They have to hit it with a hammer to get it off in an emergency. The ring will be lost forever.

I never wear it when working on cars, or with any kind of tools.

I have a friend that lost his finger getting out of a big truck when he caught the ring on the mirror. the ring and finger stayed with the truck, and he fell to the ground.

Its just NOT SAFE to keep it on when working with any tools. The wife understands this and is ok with me taking it off for these occasions

When welding you should have welding gloves and the right gear on so i dont know how the ring would be an issue ?

I'm a M welder at work and also own my own welding / fab biz and a i have a ring on both hands and a gold bracelet and havent ever had an issue.

Tho when i was younger ( 16yo ) i worked at a grocery store and snaged a ring on a frozen food rack .......hurt like he(( . never an issue for over 20+ years welding / working on cars - shop / yard work / cutting trees / electrical ect ...

I have worn my plain wedding band continuously for nearly 22 years. I've snagged it a few times, and have had to reshape it a couple if times as well.

I knew a guy who vaporized his (very bling) ring when working near a starter. I try to be more careful, no trouble so far.

I casted my wife's rings myself before we were married, and she has only removed them a few times.

I haven't worn mine since our honeymoon,36 years ago. I have one friend that had his finger pulled off due to his ring catching and grease fitting. I have 2 others that have lost the use of their ring finger due to accidents form their rings. Just not safe around machinery.

Hate to say so, but if you are so stupid as to wear them, you deserve whatever you get. Safety counselors/inspectors at work in industrial jobs, and high school and tech school shop instructors will tell you not to. Too darn easy to avoid getting hurt, losing a finger, etc., by simply taking if off at the beginning of the day, and putting it on when you leave. DUH!

In the past, I'd wear mine while doing mechanical work (usually because I would forget to remove it), but would remove it while doing electrical or auto detailing.

My wedding bands would always end up deformed, I assumed it was due to working on my toys with it on. After a few years I got tired of it and got a titanium band, haven't had a problem since!

So I guess my answer to the OP would be, "it depends". Depends on the work I'm doing and if I actually remember to take it off...at least now I don't have to worry about crushing it, if I do forget to remove it...LOL

I have a 14k white gold and a titanium that I need to decide on one of them, not sure which one is better at this point. I have a fear that if I forget to remove the ring it might scratch the car when I wash or detail or scratch up an aluminum mating surface on a car part.

I have talked to my SO and agreed that I would leave a spot on pegboard to put the ring when I work... just not conveniently by the sink like in the movies

I wore mine at first, but never was much of one for jewelry. After catching it on a hatch combing onboard ship, and feeling the potential for extreme damage, I stopped wearing it.

Now I only wear the ring when we're going out and on special occasions.

Same watch 22 years now, lots of grinder marks on it, lots of weld splatter, still never take it off.

Did have to have a ring cut off once when I crushed my hand with a transmission, it was a plain band and replaced by a even more plain band, still never take it off.

The titanium will hold up better and wear better, but as stated above, if it's ever got to be removed, you're in for a hard time. Normally hospitals use a tool much like a set of bolt cutters to remove rings. That won't work on titanium, tungsten carbide and the hardened metals.

i don't wear mine except for special occasions, i have a titanium band that is fairly wide. i like my fingers way to much. as for getting them off in an emergency its really not that hard, just like tungsten drill bits tap them with a hammer and they shatter. just use 2 pairs of vise grips on opposite sides move them fore and aft and it will snap in half. had to do it to my fathers tungsten ring when a 2x4 kicked back and shattered his finger.

I almost never took mine off until I read this thread, and I just had to take it off just now. I never thought about any injuries like the ones described.
When I bought the ring about 17 years ago, they had all kinds of "diamond cut" gold bands that looked nice in the store. I knew they were not for me. I bought a regular smooth gold band and just accepted the fact that it will soon be dulled by a bazillion minute scratches, which it has.

Rayjay, I think that foreman wanted to stick something up your ***.
