Thanks for posting these pics. I am a newbie here thanks to a friend that send me the link. I have a very similar detached "mancave" (unfinished) so these pics are great inspiration for me to get busy. You got it just right, colors, lighting, floor coating etc. Wow!

Just one question. What kind of cleaners do you use in your garage? Because I constantly:

“Look at my garage!”

“Then I look at yours!”

“And then back at mine!”

“Now back to yours!”

Sadly, mine isn’t yours.

But if I stopped using lady scented cleaning supplies, and switched to your cleaner, it could smell like yours!

Scott, I love that floor. How has it held up??? I had some kind of "flooring paint" put down that was supposed to be industrial strength when I built my house (and garage) but the stuff is NOT GOOD... I asked them specifically if it would be impervious to things that might leak out of a car (gas, brake fluid, coolant, etc) and they assured me that it was. NOT! Gas and brake cleaner will destroy this stuff. I relish the thought of trying to get it all up, but man, I would like to have a nicer looking floor!

It's held up great. I have a few scuffs in it from having to slide the engine hoist sideways when it was loaded. You can't see it unless you really look for it, so I'm extremely happy with it.

Hey Rob. Looking great! I like your idea of using ready rod.

Hi Scott, I plan on a similar overhead shelving project for my garage and I was wondering how much the overhead door brackets get in the way? As I was standing out there planning it in my head it seemed like it would be a pain. I really only have one wall I can use for the shelving, and almost half of it is going to have that bracket in the way.

No, don't have any issues with the overhead door brackets and/or track. I guess if I was trying to store something large in that area, it could cause interference, but I've had no issues.

Anyone in Canada found the by-pass door hardware? Home Depot and Rona have some but it is heavy duty and $35 for 96"

Hi scott,

I am a new member and after spending a few hours on this site I must say that your garage is by far the best! congrats on a fantastic build! You've motivated me to do the same to mine with a few additional cabinets for storage.

I went to Alpha garage's web site and used their product calculator tool and was shocked to see the price come out to $1200+ , my house is a new built and I have a standard 2-car garage with approximately 600sqf of surface to cover. Is that about right?

thanks
John

yes, the home Depot ones are the correct ones I paid 37 each in Alberta and needed 9 of them. Buy them 2 at a time and it doesn't hurt as much.

Rob/HBT

I didn't pay anywhere near that. Are your tracks steel or aluminum? I went with the cheaper galvanized steel track.

Thanks John. I'm guessing their prices have gone up (or the US dollar isn't worth as much) since I bought my Wolverine products.

Scott, the only ones that Home depot carried were the white powder coated steel ones. I know I read you paid like $12 or so. I thought ok being in Canada,.....more money, like 20 bucks maybe. I damn near fell over when they were $37 .......ouch

Such an awesome garage you have here. Def inspiration for all of us.

Just wondering, what kind of price did you get per cabinet? I know you said you kept them all the same to keep the cost down. I love the black look and it's so hard to find anyone who can make black cabinets without going into a huge price tag.

Hi from new zealand.
Wow! What a grouse job u done.....its a "car mansion"!.

Regarding painting (if your welding /grinding?) try and use oil based paints on wall as the sparks do not melt into surface and oil paints are harder and have better gloss retention and not to mention using less cotes for coverage....maily 2 cotes over the undercote/primer.

The best wall covering is treated lite grain plywood installed uprite with insulation b hind. Note: Fibreglass batts contribute to cancer and is simular to asbestosis. As its a non degradable silica glass.

Regarding lites for bling..... You can find real trendy continuous lengths of
liting which are takin out of banks, stationary / bookshops, etc...... They can be joined any length after being primed and painted with colors like silver or whatever.

Cheers carl g

oh man..... my dream car, and garage.

major jealousy over here. GOOD JOB!!!!!!!!

grew up restoring a 69 Z with my dad, than I got a 67 'stang for my 13th bday to restore with him (sat in a barn for 25 years.. 900 bucks!)... too bad it was a ford!

Anyways, since then, weve both long since wrapped up and sold our projects (he still regrets selling that car) and Ive told him my plan is to get a 67/68 and swapping all vette parts in... this time doing the resto in my garage--- you beat me to it!

Literally, love your build, and your garage. Its PERFECT!

Wow, on the GJ homepage. Very cool.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. It's great to know that we can share ideas and solutions. I spent many years in that shop building my Camaro, so I knew exactly what I wanted to do once I finally finished it off.

Congrats on having the "featured" garage here on GJ, Scott!

Thanks Rob! I just wish my shop was as big as yours. :rocker:

Last year, the local newspaper came out and asked if they could do an old fashioned 'pin-up' photoshoot using my garage and Camaro. I thought that was kinda cool - although my wife wasn't terribly impressed. lol This picture shows what they were going after. Might be somewhat ****? I don't know, so I didn't embed it.

For the fun of it, I went back through my archive of digital pics and dug up some of the shop over the years...

Here's how it looked initially, not too much in there, but I had built the shelves early on, and those perimeter shelves are the root idea for my soffit storage. Primarily because I hated looking at all the **** I had stored up there. Check out that awesome oil leak. It took me a while to find it as it ended up being a hairline crack in the oil pan. Oh well, just yank the motor, I've lost track how many times I've done that. lol

Another view of the old perimeter storage and speaker mount. I'm still using those speakers.

It's not a huge garage by any means, so I hung what I could to preserve floor space.

garage_04.jpg

Always something going on, never really wanted to take the time to properly finish the garage.

garage_05.jpg

Garages at night theme. lol

garage_06.jpg

Back in '06, I knew I wanted to go with black and grey colors, so I painted my raw wood cabinets with Cabinet and Trim paint. Worked great and I liked the colors. The wheels were turning. :D

With never enough space, I picked up a set of metal storage units, but instead of stacking them, I lined all 4 of them up in a row and bolted them together. This was also the beginning of how I thought I wanted to have a section of base cabinets.

This will freak people out. lol Before sending my car off to the media blaster, I made a paint booth and sprayed the underside of my car with SEM bedliner. With the blocks oriented in different directions, it was rock solid. The underside turned out awesome, very happy with that decision. I have a pic of it here.

The Rochester Post-Bulletin did that? I guess they're a little more racy than they used to be. :)

It's got to be fun to see these two pictures next to each other, though. (Oil leak and all.)

Thanks Jack, I appreciate that coming from you. It has certainly come a long ways. As for the oil leak, that was a tough one, I couldn't find the source (a hair line crack in the back of the pan) until I added flourescent dye to the oil.

I just discovered this thread from the main page.

First off I have to say the finished product looks like it took an army of people and a dump truck full of cash. I couldn't believe after reading it that you did all of the work yourself.

Love the bulkheads and lighting, and the cabinets.

Just when I thought I was out (e.g. close to being done my garage), they pull me back in! :)

Fantastic job XcYZ.

Saw this thread from the home page and this is awesome. You did a fantastic job. After completing the Camaro with attention to detail the garage could only turn out just as nice. Great job.
