I see a lot of postings on here for garage/estate/flea market finds, and I really like seeing what's out there and what it's goin' for...maybe it deserves it's own thread! Anyways, here is my own haul from a lunch break estate sale visit on Friday. I just stuffed a bunch of stuff in a big bag...still going through it.
Highlights are:
Snap On 1/4" ratchet, Craftsman V series 1/2 & 3/8 speed handles & BE 3/8 ratchet, Bonney refrigeration wrench, Plomb 1/2 torque wrench, Prentiss #19 & Reed Pipe vise, lot's of other interesting stuff!

Edit: Forgot about the $ ... dropped a $50 bill, not a great deal, but the vises included sealed the deal for me.

What do you think of that ratcheting push-in to turn screwdriver tool? I've always been interested, but never really thought it's be that useful a tool.

Never used them myself, but I thought they were interesting too. I think they are both Millers Falls and the one sounds like it has the bits in the handle... as soon as I figure out how to get the cap off :headscrat

So...not wanting to get into a deep philosophical discussion or anything :spit: but...

after looking at this last load of tools I brought home, I was asking myself why? :headscrat

Yes, it is 99% all USA made, which is becoming more and more rare, and there are a few pieces that I might actually use, and a few that are just plain really interesting that I might keep...for what, I don't know, maybe pass them on to my son when he's older...then they will really be antiques!
Then there's the rest that I will probably clean up and try to re-sell or give away to family/friends.

So, why is this never ending tool hunt so addicting and why can't I get to the point of just buying the few pieces that I will actually use?

Thanks for the vent session... I wrote this in response to me once again searching the online classifieds for the next "big" sale even after asking myself "why?"

Well...fell off the "tool" wagon again :lol_hitti

Short story... needed some new bench grinder wheels, so I did a quick search on CL first. Found an ad for a B&D bench grinder with extra new wheels for $5 ! hmmm, had to swing by and check that out. While there, the lady started pulling out other tools and asked if I knew anything about them & if I was interested. I was trying hard not to
Snap On, SK, Bonney, Blue Point, Husky USA, Blackhawk...my head was spinning...that feeling is so addicting :bounce:
and yes, I took the bench grinder for $5, plus another $40 for everything else.

Some nice scores. I buy used tools because I like upgrading my tools for a decent price. Like you said domestic made tools are getting hard to find. But I also view old tools like antique cars. I heard one guy say he doesn't feel like he owns his collector cars, he is just a caretaker of them for future generations. I'm like that with my tools, especially some of the really old stuff. If not for people like us, those old tools might be rusting away or worse yet in the scrap yard waiting to be recycled. It's a fun hobby, I'm not in it to make $, but if I can offset my expenses thats great.

The black handled push drill to get to the bits it is like taking bullets out of an old cowboy gun(single action army). You line up the hole on the top with each chamber. The other Millers Fall push drill looks to not have a place to store bits from the photo. They refer to the long Yankee brand you have as a spiral or Yankee Screwdriver. If it is a North Bros it is pre WW2 end.

Nice haul.

Your pics would be easier and faster for all to see if you uploaded them to garage journal.

Wow! What a score! YOU ****!!! I'm drooling over those S-K socket sets in the original boxes! There is some really nice old chrome in that haul you got.

I could not agree more with Gregg. Saving old quality tools (particularly those like Bonney that are not even manufactured any longer) from being recycled at the scrapper is satisfying and a fun way to spend your time. Its amazing what a bit of cleaning, polishing and Evaprorust can do to bring some tools back to a useful life. I do feel a bit like a caretaker of the tools my father passed on to me; and I hope to pass them on to someone like my nephew who appreciates the quality of the vintage chrome.

I always asked when picking up a craigslist deal, or at a yard/ estate sale if there's anything else they're selling. Often I leave with an odd box of junk if not for free a few bucks. I am still using nuts and bolts from a 5 gallon bucket of "junk" I pulled home on my skatebord when I was 15. (22 years ago!!!)

Yeah, I do that myself sometimes...depending on the situation. Sometimes, I just want to get the hell out of there. :3gears:

The other thing I do is not talk about individual things & prices. I start with one or two things to see where they are at as far as pricing...
then I start making a seperate pile of things I want for a package price. I really try and stay away from piecemeal pricing.

...then again, I usually take more than I should when that happens :lol_hitti

I got a pretty cool suprise today;
bought this little tool box... just cause i thought it was cool..... for a quarter. when i got it home and started to clean it up alittle i notice cardboard in the bottom of the box so i pull the carboard out and this plate is underneath.. so i cleaned it up alittle too.

I posted the plate in free parking to see if any one was a Model T guy who might know of this Fred Upshaw or anything about any car shows at the Broadmoor... who knows?

Stopped by the public auction last night, which I hardly ever do since it's rare that they have any tool collections, but I found this nice little collection of mini vises that I won! I am digging the Wilton baby bullet. :D ... the other is a Stanley in real nice shape and the middle one is a mystery so far, but it is unique and ornate...any ideas?? :dunno:
I also picked up a vintage Craftsman 1/2" drill with the metal case.

Great score on those vises, r07d24!

Here is my latest estate sale haul. I still cannot believe that I found Craftsman -V- breaker bars and speed handle to match my old Craftsman tool set! I've been looking for a long time, and they just fell into my lap (with vintage Craftsman pliers even!).

Nice! I picked up a set of those speed handles a few weeks ago myself. Let me know if you need another set ( 1/2 & 3/8) ;)

That socket dead center (looks like a 7/8 hex drive), can you tell me the numbers on it please? Thank you. :)

Okay, slight thread detour (but related, honest!)... heads-up all you Northern California GJ members, there is an big estate sale coming up this weekend with lots of tools! Check it out (lots of pics):
http://www.norcalestate.com/up-and-coming-estate-sale.php

I may not make it (darn job), but if you see a tall guy wearing a tan "Detroit Muscle" ballcap and a big grin, walking around grabbing all the Proto tools he can find, that would be me. :bounce:

Its a bit of a drive north for me. But you guys in Southern Oregon and Redding area have no excuse for missing out on the tool deals!

Big time suckage going on in this thread. Also, flea market season up here doesn't even start up for another 6 weeks.

Yeah, I hear ya... we just got another 12" plus of snow the last couple of days here.
Most of my recent finds have been moving or estate sales, but they are very limited right now, especially ones with tools.
