Starting to look for my new garage door (9x7). I want insulated, no windows and plan to have the rails mounted as high as I can get them (high lift).

What are things to look for? R-value? Gauge of the steel? Brands?

Thanks in advance!

I can't help you with much of the other stuff, but I've been happy with my insulated clopay doors. They do a good job keeping the garage warm in the winter.

I have the Clopay (sold by HD) in my house, R17 for 2" premium door. Nice doors. I went with Ideal doors for my shop. They are sold by Menards and look just like the Clopays (same R value) but were considerably cheaper. Come to find out, Ideal and Clopay are the same company. Go figure!!

Go with a sandwich style product, with a steel skin inside and out, and a foam core. Don't get too caught up in the advertised R value. As long as you get a door built in this manner of a reasonable thickness, you will be very happy.

I'm no expert, but that's why I went to a local garage door company's showroom. No obligation to buy, but plenty of info from the salesman (I know, I know...) and you can get hands on with the product.

Amarr doors here and I'm happy. Not a massive amount of insulation (about two inches thick, foam with a vinyl cover.) Seem to be OK, not horribly cold compared with other things in the shop. No serious leakage either, they are tight.

I have a Garaga door.

It is steel sheathed over foam insulation. I think the advertised R value was ~R15

I went with CHI. They're 3 layer with a steel rather than a vinyl back. Also looked at Clopay. The old garage was uninsulated so I couldn't tell you how much of the indoor is attributable to the garage door insulation vs. the finished walls and insulation but I will say it is very comfortable in the garage. Keep in mind that I'm in California so cold to me is 30.

I have Amarr door with steel on both sides and foam between. Seems to work rather well. Usually about 5-10 degrees different temp inside the detached garage.

My Amarr door is insulated, very well made.
I would stay away from the doors @ the big box stores.Call a local guy, especially if you needed it serviced in the future.
Good Luck

Are you staring fresh here?

Can you use a roll up? They are great for being out of teh way of lifts.

I am, but everything I've read says roll-ups aren't insulated as well (unless you spend big bucks) and they are hard to get a good seal on them. It gets hot (really hot) here in the summer and I want to make the garage as tight as I can.

That is true.

I used 5 roll ups on my shop and they work well, but you need to order the insulated doors and the top and side seal kits.

I was more concerned with the lift clearance than I was the seal but I added the seal kits and they work pretty well. They don't call this HOTlanta for nothin'!!!

Any problems with your door? I am looking at two 12 ft wide by 11 ' tall doors now. My local installer can get them pretty cheap. He says they told him pricing is going up May 1st. His price installed for two doors is about what overhead door wanted for one without installation. He is very well respected. I personally know three companies that use him. I was just interested in quality of the Garaga Doors.

There are a few things additional things that you can do to help insulate your garage doors if you find yours are lacking. I have not done any yet, but I'm planning on working on my parents doors in the near future and can post up the results.

I have a Clopay 10x7 insulated door. Seems like a decent quality door at a reasonable price. BTW I have the inside door locks which I believe is more secure. It doesn't rattle or leak even with driving 30 mph winds/ rain etc. YMMV.

I have 2 9x8 Amarrs on my new heated detached garage. Seemed to work well through the winter. I have had the same doors (3 8x7's) on the house garage for a number of years. They still look new. Mine have windows but I presume you can get them without

I used 9x8 Wayne Daltons on the garage, I believe they are a R9 insulation. They match what is on the house garage. . . . . making the wife happy.

Wayne Dalton is also made in state and carried by local lumber yard.
