I was looking to order one and then found a few on eBay but the prices were way too much, even before shipping to Europe so I made one of my own.

Borrowed a sheet of sheet metal from work, looked at the pics on eBay and started cutting and bending my own project. Didn't come out 100% perfect but it will do the job just fine. Loaded up all my air tools on it for the STRESS TEST and it passed

Flat sheet for a support arm is going to flex suddenly and nasty. I think you need some kind of non bending thing there.

Nice Job!..I think because the support is so short that bending wont be an issue..its not like its 3 ft long..shorter material bends less...I think it will be fine...would take alot of pressure to bend that being so short..probably tip the cart before it bent...Good job.

Its strength is from being totally straight, once it bends even a tiny amount it will be MUCH less rigid. Bend up the edges a bit, making a wide U, and it should be ok.

Yup... that's the easiest thing. Or fasten a piece of small gauge angle iron to it for added support.

You made a nice shelf there... we just don't want to see it go sour on you.

I'm a little confused. Where does the brace go when shelf is folded down? Is it removable? I have an Idea for a shelf using a restaurant sheet pan (aluminum,18"x26") mounted to the side of my box.

CC Have you ever stepped on a empty soda can? If you step on it, it will hold you up. But if a small tap with a finger causes a crease the can crushes. Try it.

Uhhh, this doesn't work for me, 250 lbs doesn't work, but I agree, it needs some bead rolls in it at least.

charlie-

that's a great looking shelf. congrats on building it yourself.

i agree with everyone else though -- you need to either bend up the edges of the brace or roll a few beads into it.

1320stang, it does work. I did it a couple of years ago. Ok many many years ago I think you may exceeded the limits of the can. Try a lighter (100-150 lbs) person.

I was surprised it did work, because the can was so thin.

This is the essence of why crushing a beer can against your head is so impressive, especially if nobody notices you putting in that first little dent. Bar trick a guy I know does is to hold his arms straight out in front of him fully extended and crush a beer can between them. Hint, it aint easy.

Oh, I used to could do it in junior high, stand on the can, bend down and pop both sides with your index fingers, just be careful to pull your fingers back out real fast.....
