Identify these tool boxes

Picked these up on CL and have looked everywhere for markings, two have been repainted very poorly, the Mac is factory paint but I can't find any identity on it either. Pretty funny how both the Mac and the big Snapon are identical!

Thanks if advance for any and all help, guesses, and input!

BTW where would I find the entire locking set at including the bars? Is that a replaceable part, I know the locks are but is the complete assembly?

A Mac sticker doesn't make that a Mac box anymore than the sticker on the first box makes it an Earnhart... lol.

The first two boxes are Snap On KRA-59's.

All three are Snap-on. The third one is probably from the '40s-early '50s. I've got one of each and they are great little general purpose boxes.

You've got a week's work ahead of you to remove those damned stickers, remove the drawers, pressure wash, blow dry, wipe down with WD40. When you send us the "after" photos, they won't look like the same boxes.

OK I picked up what I thought was the Mac and the small snapon both loaded with tools for $150 and the other 59 for $120.

I may have paid too much since they are all missing their locks and lock assembly but I love the older stuff.

I plan on cleaning them up and soda blasting them and possibly sending out the side handles to have chromed or powder coat them myself.

Now off to call Snapon for prices on lock assemblies, silly me for thinking that the one was a Mac, dam stickers!

To me it looks like the first two are kra 61s. As far as I know the 59s only have one handle on the front. If they are around 31" wide they should be kra 61s.

**** just ordered two complete lock assemblies for a 59 on the phone now seeing if the part #'s are the same for the 61s!

31" wide only one beat up cylinder in one says 1399 no Y or K on the cylinder.

OK Snap says NLA on any locking rod assembly for ANY 61 series so I'll keep what I have coming and cross my fingers!
I'll try and pull some drawers tonight and find out what exactly these buggers are!

Two lock set assemblies complete with cylinder, nut, spacer, locking washer, cam and with matching keys and two locking bars to do both boxes $71.40 delivered.

Then I called back in and ordered the locking bars for the KRA62 series since they are 31 3/32" long for $18.50 each. I imagine the locking bars on my initial order for KRA59 will be too short since they are only 26" wide.

I'll worry about the small box after I figure out what it is and if I'm going to keep it.

I, too love the old Snap-on boxes. However, restoring one, soda blasting and repainting, is more work than some cars I've done. It's very easy to get upside-down in cherrying-out an old box.

As mentioned before, straighten the dents you can get to, pressure wash, lube the slides, wipe with WD40, fix the locks and live with them for a while.

If the patina keeps bothering you, the blasting and painting is still an option.

Didn't have time to pull any drawers and do any checking tonight as I had to sign some paperwork on my new place. Should have some time tomorrow I hope to continue the investigation.

Looks like the big ones are KRA61D's and the only guess on the little one so far is KR53.

Not sure if I'll keep the little one yet or not but both the bigger ones are getting a complete rehab for sure!

If I decide to sell the little one anyone care to venture a fair guess on price?

I hear you on going over the deep end on restoring things but I spend more time than money doing it which is OK with me. We just got done redoing a Quincy 310 from the late 60's broke everything down, replaced some valve parts, soda blasted the tank and the pump and gave it a nice coat of royal blue. Paid $150 for the compressor and another $150 or so in parts, here's a before and nearly complete, one more top coat to spray.

Nice looking boxes!

Restoring old boxes takes a lot more time than anticipated - but that's why we have hobbies. I spent twice as much $ to restore these two than the original purchase price and a crapload of time but they turned out nice and I enjoy using them. They don't see heavy use - mostly paper documents, manuals, small parts, etc.

I have two more - hopefully I'll have time to do them this summer.

If I where you I would keep the small box (KR53) as well, it will look just great with a little effort in it.

Wow those look nice! What red did you use?

Everyone says sunrise red rustoleum but I'm thinking about having some imron mixed to match original snapon red, it sticks sooooo much better than rustoleum and about a billion times more durable, plus I hate prepping stuff 2,3, or 4 times to paint!

Thanks for the compressor comment, it was a labor of love! I have about 40 hours in it but rehabbing a 40 year old Quincy brings a smile to my face!

I'm with Johnny, keep the OG paint. Clean and wax it and you are good to go.
