recycled office chair bottoms

This is my rolling tool/parts holder for small jobs. It's made out of 1 office chair, 1 oil drip pan, 1 piece of 3/4 pipe, and a support plate.

I have a chair base with a metal tractor seat bolted on top to roll around on.

I have a chrome seat from a 1950s Exercycle I plan to use in a similar manner.

I have sold HUNDREDS of such chairs at auction. If anyone is looking to make one of these (or some other contraption), I am sure you can find them at local auctions.

Many projects have been done with those chair bases. A couple things to keep in mind are that the casters generally aren't resistant to oil, and the weight limitation seems to be about 300 pounds.

I noticed the piston compressed pretty low so it's actually the same height as most rolling work stools they sell but much more comfortable. Wide soft seat, has removeable backrest. That's nice.

I have welded steel tractor seats on them and use them in the shop for my welding stool and to roll around on under the lift. You can usually find them free you cruise the alleys behind a building renovation.

If you are looking for an exercycle or two, three, four of them, go to an estate auction. I can't tell you how many of them we have had to throw in dumpsters over the years. The most I have ever sold one for is $2. Excercise equipment, in my professional opinion, is no more than a glorified clothes hanger.

That is how you know the good equipment? Buy how many clothes you can store on them!

Lessee... the two speed motor I used for my small lathe. The seat is awaiting a chair project, the transmission is slated to become part of a can crusher, the long, ribbed power cord went on my old 3/8" drill, various cool pieces of hardware will be used elsewhere, and the rest of it is still out there somewhere...

I don't see how anyone actually got any excercise on one of those things, but I got plenty just loading it in my truck to bring it home

i think they are very cool! i have one that i ride daily,it will wear you out,no kidding!
autioneer,I make my living buying and selling and i've most likely been to as many auctions as you! (wink!)
but i have to agree that the guy that gets the most exersize from exersize equimpment is the UPS guy that delivers it,and then takes it back after the 30 free trial!!

I noticed nobody said they have a source for old tractor seats. Lived in a share house once where the kitchen seats where steel tractor seats, a plough blade base and piece of two inch pipe as the up stand, dam they where cool.

Can't say about the land of Oz, but in the US nutbuster tractor seats have become collectables with damn high prices. The cast iron variety are near impossible to come by without forking out major $$$.
I know one collector with over 100 seats on his barn wall. Of course the barn contains 37 tractors as well.

How do I find an estate auction in my area? Not that I expect to find anything but old clothes and steamer trunks.

They are listed in the newspaper. They also give a brief description on what they are going to sell. Also look for business closings They have some great deals.
