Project "Truck Shop" underway

Well the heat backed off to the mid 90s this week so we got a lot accomplished. All the walls are up. Trusses will be coming Tuesday/Wed. along with the steel beam. We've still got to get the top plates on, the walls leveled and the corners sheathed. Its starting to look like a shop finally though.

More updates!

Progress has slowed a little, since i am back on day shift.

Still managed to get quite a bit done on the weekends...

12' ceilings over one bay, 10' over the rest of the shop. I over spec'd the steel beam so i can hang a trolley and a chain hoist.

I am in the same boat as I have a lot of tress in the area I want my garage to be in and I really dont want to loose the trees. Did you go through any trouble with roots while digging for the foundation at all. How close are the tress?

Did you go through any trouble with roots while digging for the foundation at all. How close are the tress?

I had a terrible time with two particular root balls. However, these were trees that actually had to be cut down. There are some pictures earlier in the thread, you can check out if you like. I didnt have any trouble with the trees still currently surrounding the building. I think the closest one is about 8'.

Ive got some more updates...

Decking and tar paper are up and the sheathing is almost complete.

Got the sand graded and mostly leveled out. Waiting on the concrete guy to show up, its like pulling teeth with subs, glad this will be the only one I use. 1700 sq ft of concrete is just too much for the two of us to handle. We will be pouring the approach ourselves though.

Ive got a question if anyone can help. Looking ahead, i plan to cover the shop in steel sheet metal above the brick wainscot. Being that i am planing on a charcoal shingled roof, i need soffit vents. Do they make perforated steel i can use for this? My soffit will need to match the bronze steel siding i have planned. I guess i could use aluminum if i could find it, but its starting to get scarce with all the vinyl these days. Aluminum and Steel dont get along very well either. Raw steel and raw aluminum will rot each other out if left in the weather. Is this something to consider or am I being over cautious?

I would think that the supplier you're getting the metal siding from would have a source of matching or complimentary perforated steel panels for a soffit.

I know it exists because pole barn companies like Morton and FBI use it on a lot of buildings every year.

Just a couple updates. Today, got the sheathing finished and clipped the corners of the two 8x10 doors.

I think it gives it a little bit of a barn feel, i like it...

Big Updates today!!!

Sorry i havent been able to post up pictures in a couple weeks. The daylight savings time means its dark before i leave work. Anyways...concrete and drains are in. Brick wainscot is up. It looks great if i do say myself.

Got the Approach and sidewalk poured. Also have got about 75% of the shingles on and all 4 of the overhead doors are in. The white one will get painted to match in the spring.

They are all at least 8' from the foundation except for the on on the front left corner of the shop. This tree is about 6' from the corner and we didnt get into its roots at all when we dug the footings. The trees do look closer in the pictures than they really are.

Thanks for the compliments about the brick. Brick was one thing i wanted to do from the start. I think it makes it look more like a custom building and it ties it in with the house.

When you asked about where did i get those, and how hard was it to install where you asking about the brick work?

I am getting closer to the promise land!

That is one great looking garage. Mine is built right in the trees too.

Earlier in the thread you were looking for ventilated soffit ideas? I used James Hardie fiber cement vented soffit for mine. Certainteed is another manufacturer of fiber cement soffit, though I liked the look of the Hardie soffit better.

Havent been to many updates recently, but heres where we stand. Shingles are on. Soffit and 2 of the 3 gutters are up. Hopefully should be on our way with the siding by the begining of the month. Also built a landscape planter and retaing wall. Stairs are up and the loft decked. Try not to notice the clutter of all my junk...
