No more photoeyes!!!

I just read an old thread about how much some guys hate the photoeyes on their garage door openers and don't want to mount them on the ceiling. there is a LEGAL solution.

If you buy a Martin door and a Martin opener at the same time it will be shipped without photoeyes. Dave Martin is very hung up on saftey, these doors are the safest you can buy. the opener will reverse on a baloon.

that being said, I can sell you a quieter door, with a much better R-value, a battery back up, that uses standard hardware (not proprieatary) for about a grand less. But it will have photoeyes.

If you wanted to get around photoeyes for less, just call your local garage door guy and buy a used liftmaster or genie that is pre-'93. they can be rebuilt, if the electronics die, just get another one for 20 bucks from the same guy.

Or buy a commercial opener and use a sensing edge.

The spiders love them and build nests around them.

On top of that, I manage to bang into them all the time too!

We have a South facing house and garage. When we first moved in everything worked fine. Then I noticed that in the afternoon when the garage door was up it would not close when I hit the remote. What I came to find out was that the angle of the sun was just right that it hit the photocell and would not allow the door to close. I wound up moving mine above the track and out of the sun.

How do dealerships get around this...?. Around here Id say 90% do not have photoeyes or safety stops... Many built within a year or two do not.. Most service drives do not either... Even those with the high speed doors. I go to about 50 different dealers and always look for some odd reason

I found a guy converting his garage into a "man cave" he had the door and opener sitting in his garbage pile. I asked him if I could have it and he gave me the door, all the hardware and the opener from the early 1980s.

Not only do I have no photo eyes for the garage, I also have a door with all the hardware for my shop.

As of the end of August of last year, all UL listed commercial operators must only operate with constant pressure on the close button or have photo eyes installed within 6 inches of the floor or a monitored safety edge sensor installed on the leading edge of the door.

Might not "mesh" properly with the conversation, but........

I have a "special" project and believe a garage door opener will do what I need. I do need remote control and possibly up and down limit switches. Saftey switches are not required. Is it possible to jump out the sensor inputs? As long as the unit will run without sensors, it will work for me.

I've tried to jump the sensor circuit. Takes a smarter person than I. OTOH, what's the big deal about the eyes? If that's the only little nuisance I have to live with, I'm golden.

I mounted the eyes 12" apart on the ceiling above the motors. Door still stops when it hits an object.

Easiest solution, just what I did also, except not on the ceiling, just the joist right at the opener.

best thing to do is get a pre' 93 liftmaster or genie and rig it up yourself. You should be able to get one cheap from your local garage door guy.

I actually like the photoeyes. I mount them at bumper height and they help me park as far back as I can get, so I have as much room in front of my workbench as possible. Anybody know how to go about mounting a second set on to a LM3800 opener? The wife seems to leave the back door open on the Honday Ody and I know it's just a matter of time before someone closes the garage door on the van door. Thanks
