Monte, how do you find Tone tools? I have some of their sockets and find that they rust easily. Finishing is not so nice. How would you compare them to KTC and Koken?

How would you rate the three on a scale of 1 (worst) to 10 (best)? Thanks!

I only had the torque wrench and still have 2 ratchets from the flea market but they´re only for my collection so i don´t use them because i don´t like metal handles. The chrome is still like new, the dealer had about 10 Tone torque wrenches from a closed motorcycle store but none of them showed rust or other defects. The finish of the Tone ratchets is "so lala", KTC + Koken is definately better. Tone maybe a 5, KTC + Koken a 8, and Nepros (judging from pics) a 10.

Catfish, I have your items on hand now, will get them in the mail tomorrow. Do you prefer a Green or Red grip wrench? Thanks Frank

On page 2 you show a picture of what could be a 10mm Ko-ken socket where did it come from, and why does it have a lock on hole??

Also the KTC socket looks very Ko-ken'ish to me what is it like on the broaching..pic?

The Koken socket is from the flea market. I don´t know how old it is. It only says "Koken Japan 983" and yes it´s a 10mm 12 point socket (3/8" dr.) . There are no ball retention grooves, only 2 holes instead.

here´s a pic of the KTC socket on the left and the 10mm Koken on the right

since it´s a 12 pt socket and slightly worn and dirty i made a pic of the
KTC on the left and a 11mm Koken 6-pt. on the right:

they look similar, the "flank drive" looks different though and the drive side looks different too. KTC has a slightly better polished surface too.

Thanks for that (983.......March 1998 by the way), I know Ko-ken used to make the Beta impact sockets in chrome but not with own name......or perhaps they did.
Looking at the pic of the KTC I would say it was made by Ko-ken take a look at this.........EXTRA.jpg...Ko-ken can do high polish chrome.

Is this KK3400MSP-SET-12 by any chance? I was looking at these from uktools.com when they had an introductory price for them, but missed out, and the price doubled - ouch! Went from 26 GBP to 48 GBP...

nice polished Koken sockets :bowdown: even with knurling :)

In the japanese magazine "Factory Gear" they visited the KTC/Nepros factory where they showed how the Nepros sockets are made and they showed a pic which seems to be a cut away view of a cold forging machine for sockets:

so while the sockets appear similar i think they make their own sockets. Maybe on the same machines with the same broaching/forming tools.

I own an Engineer PZ-58 screw remover plier. Recently, I used them to hold two threaded shafts (with a thin round cap) that accept phillips screws to secure a handle on a bathroom shower door. The gripping teeth on the PZ-58 worked better than the PZ-55 to hold the threaded shafts in place while I tightened the phillips screws on the back of the shower door handle.

I own both the Mac AR250RH rotating-head 1/4" air ratchet, and Mac AR778A sealed-head 3/8" air ratchet, and I love both. The 1/4" is just now starting to slow down and stop working after 3 years of heavy-duty daily use. Both made in Japan. :)

I have seen those saws used here instead of the traditional type. What is there advantage?

Japanese Saws cut on the pull stroke versus the push stroke of American or European saws. I like using a Japanese style blade because it is usually thinner so it makes makes starting a kerf easier and better for fine detail work like cutting thin pins for dovetails. A good Lie-Neisen backsaw is the next best push style saw I have found but still prefer the Japanese style saws.

If you find a quality import and can beat Japan Woodworkers prices or my current Bridge City blade costs I am a buyer. :)
