Review: Harbor Freight US General 56" rolling cabinet

This is a review of the new 56" 11 drawer industrial roller. I saw this in the local Harbor Freight and thought the quality was great. It is Item number #67681. It is advertised as a "new" item. I personally had never seen it in the store before, although some on this forum say they have. It was on sale for $799 and I had a 20% off coupon which brought the price to around $639. I have attached a few photos of the box in the shipping crate and the uncrating process.

The cabinet was packed extremely well in double/double corrugated cardboard which surrounded the unit which, itself, was surrounded by styrofoam and wrapped in plastic. The unit was on a sturdy custom pallet and blocked in place with large wooden stilts under the base of the cabinet. It was fully assembled with the exception of the side handles. This monster weighed in at 480lbs. I cannot adequately describe the quality feel and look of this cabinet enough. If you have a HF in your area, I strongly recommend you bring cash when you go look at it. I recently saw a used S-O in the local C L of comparable size for $4000. I am glad I passed on it. If you are the type of person who NEEDS a name brand box truck badge on your roller, I would imagine any of the badges from any of those companies would look right at home on this beauty.

The fire-engine red powdercoat paint was flawless and brillant. This box truly reminded me of a vintage S-O cabinet, although I cannot remember which model. All the deep drawers have double ball bearing sliders. Each drawer has a locking latch on the right hand side. I have heard others complain about this feature, but I have not had any problem with it. The unit came with good quality non-slip drawer liners which I found to be a nice surprise in the bottom drawer. The chrome on the handles is brilliant. The red industrial castors were a surprise. They look very heavy duty and come equipped with zerks for oiling. Wow. I am one happy camper. Sometimes after buying something for ME, I feel a tinge of guilt. Not with this. It will last through mine and my sons lifetime. It will replace the old Craftsman you see behind it in many of the pictures. That box is over 15 years old and still looks great. I will likely keep it for use in my wood working shop. That's all for now.

Now fill it to the brim with tools and roll it across an uneven shop floor and listen for the welds to go "snap, crackle, pop".

not likely - my 41" has been rolled in and out of trailers, across gravel driveways and paddocks, and still works and looks perfect. and it is loaded to the gills... the 56" appears to be built almost identically except with shiny paint.

. . . That's all for now.

"That's all for now"? It took you two years to write this and then you say that's all for now?

He-he, just kidding. It does look like a good toolbox. The casters are usually the weak point on those but glad you got some good ones. I will be replacing the ones one my tool cart as soon as I can afford some good ones and they will probably cost as much as the whole cart did.

Thanks,
Steve

Were you speaking to my post above? If so, I'm only buying new casters because the TOOL CART casters were cheapos and drag. The whole cart was only $99. They don't compare to others I have on my own fabricated carts of sorts. One finger pushing is all it should take. :)

Whoa Simpleseed. Way to burn my very first post on the forum. I remember in the third grade, a couple of fifth graders came up to me. One kept me busy while the other one kneeled down behind me. The one in front gave a good push and over I went. I see you run solo. Can't say you make me like this box any worse. I am sorry you had a bad experience with yours.

No bad experiences here, i wont buy one. Sorry, iv had a negative day lol. Hope the box works out for you. Its a good looking box. At the last shop i worked at a tech had the 56 filled to the brim and the welds started breaking. It was really really overloaded though and he moved it around the shop daily.

I got one and it's 2.5 weeks old and I love it!! Don't worry about the haters not everybody can afford what their mind wishes they could! I am proud as **** of mine and it works way better then the comparable (price point) craftsman box I almost bought!

The only thing I don't like is the lack of add ons for this box!

Congrats man and throw some tools in there and snap some more pics!!!

I'm going to transfer the tools from the Craftsman to the new one. I don't have expensive tools. I try to keep them all Craftsman. Here in in Las Vegas they have plenty of Pawn Shops. I have this as a home shop cabinet. I don't turn wrenches professionally. I just enjoy tools. It is a weakness. I just can't pass up things sometimes. I have never bought HF tools before but the quality has really come up. I remember when you could still pick sand out of the castings. Their tools look good but I have never been able to pull the trigger and buy the mechanic tools as long as there are good deals on used Craftsman at the second hand stores and on the internet. I would love S-O but cannot justify the price for a me being a casual user. I do love this box though, and it works for me. I am proud to have it in my garage.

Simplespeed. Sorry I got bent on your comment. I see so much great stuff on this forum and I get envious. It is nice that one can get some good quality stuff without going broke. I feel the cabinet is somewhere between the Craftsman and big box truck as far as quality. For $650 it is very hard to beat and I can still save for the kids education. It will likely occupy a space in one spot im my garage and stay there a for a good part of it's life till I die and it finds a new home. thanks for taking the time to make a counter response to my counter response. There are plenty of tools snobs on this forum and I can see you are not one of them now. I appreciate people with opinions.

What HF did you find that would still let you use the 20% coupon on a tool cabinet???

yeah, first thing that struck me was that the coupon was still allowed, especially on such a large item.

He's in Vagas... the salesman probably didn't know the company policy on coupons so he just gambled and gave him the discount anyway.

Man that is a nice looking box. I'm currently using a 26" Craftsman 8 drawer cheapo and have been looking at those Harbor Freight boxes. I really want the 41" to add on easier later but I hate the powdercoat finish. Wish it was shiny like the 56". Maybe next time I'm there I'll talk myself into the bigger one.

I have the same 56" US General Gotta say i ain't been nothing but impressed. the drawers are filled they are not bowing in the center. I don't roll it around the shop though-I got a 5 drawer service cart for that (also US GENERAL)

Even a stopped clock is right twice in a day - This a seriously good deal. I opted for this over the multi -unit 13 drawer cabinet because of the depth. and I 'll make that choice again and again.

the next plan is to craft a work top for this 56" wood core stainless steel to get a bench outta the deal

I've seen different boxes in HF that were around for a short run then disappear. I hope they keep this and add a top box or side cabinet. I think youll enjoy your cabinet too.

If I kept all my tools in one place, I might take a look at it. Having just bought the bottom of the line Craftsman Basic tool chest with my $10 off coupon. I can say it will work for me,Liked it much better then the last combo I bought from Sears.
One day I will get A roller, Yet I as most need to clear up floor space.

That is one nice box. If I were a pro, I would opt for S-O too. I kind of like the deep drawer. Brake cleaner, spray paint and other tall stuff can go in there and keeps them off the tops of the work benches. Looks like your cabinet is going into or coming out of storage?

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is this space all about? Is there anything that this extra space is used for?

To the OP, congrats on the purchase. That is a LOT of box for the money. A buddy of mine who does aviation work bought that box, and he loves it. I was impressed when I went and checked it out. Slap FULL of tools and the drawers glide nice and easy, great paint finish and build quality.

If I ever grow out of my Matco box and have the itch for more space I'll be buying one of these. Definitely helps I have a HF 15 minutes from me so I just go put in the order and it's brought to the store. No shipping.

Yeah, the space above the top drawer. Wondered why it is so big and/or the top drawer isn't taller.

Does anyone know the next time this box will be available for less than $799? I need a new box asap but prefer to pay less than retail if possible.

Will the Shop20 code work on this box? Any one try it?

Any one used the Shop20 code in Northern California.

I tried plugging the shop20 code in on the website with a second item in the cart and it did apply the discount to give the lower price. Would the local store honor it? That I don't know. I know I've seen this thing cheaper than $799. I just can't remember when or where.

Are the drawers keyed alike? I have the 42' top chest, bottom roller, and the side locker and they are all keyed different.

BTW - Great looking box.

I've been to HF and checked out this box. I don't think you can get a box this decent for anywhere near this kind of money. It looked plenty sturdy to me. If I hadn't already bought an International roll away box, top and side cabinet combo, I would have purchased two of these for the same money. Live and learn. A great box for the money......
