SnapOn - What is all the fuzz about?

I've always liked a good quality tool of any kind. When I came here on the board I heard SnapOn this, SnapOn that... then one day I got curious and went on their website curious and interested in some toolboxes.

I was like this when I saw the prices -> :scared:

Ok I thought, it must be some crazy quality stuff. Then one day at work somebody gave me a SnapOn screwdriver. Wow... I felt like I'm holding a dilithium chrystal for the Enterprise... Well, it was only SDD224O. Two days later the tip was bent and pushed back into the handle so it came up on the top of the handle. And the work I did with it was nothing special... my every day Phoenix Contact screwdriver does it daily for months and still looks like the day I got it. Ok, I thought, I overused/abused it and it was just a bad sample.

Then recently I broke my URREA diagonal cutters and I wanted something new, better - so I immediately thought of SnapOn. Found the local dealer and asked for 86CF. He had two pieces in stock. The first piece he showed me had the blades totally misaligned and the second was acceptable. Price? 56 USD :scared: Yikes.
Finally I bought them just because I didn't want to look bad since he spent 3/4 of an hour looking for the pliers in the back of the store.

Now that I'm shopping for the complete pliers kit, I'm calculating a SnapOn kit would cost me around 400 USD (46ACP, 87CF, 86CF, 57AHLP, 196CF, 96CF). On the other hand Craftsman has 11-piece set of pliers like above for 90USD.

So, can please somebody explain me what all the fuzz is about SnapOn, because I just don't get it.

watch out you will have people wanting to get your address to come whup your a** for saying anything bad about snap on....

i personally just buy their ratchets because they have more teeth than any other brands out there i have access to. Specialty tools *some* i buy snap-on just because of the warranty. Everything else i source elsewhere.

Snap-On makes great basic hand tools. That's about all they make to be honest. Everything else is made for them. Even their subsidiary Williams was helping to fill production by making many of Snap-On's combo wrenches and such, that was recently too. Snap-On has also in the last 10 years closed a few of its production facilities.

There are lot's of other great basic hand tool makers out there to that can be had at a fraction of the cost and are just as high quality and just as nice to use. Of course, those are fighting words around here. :headscrat I'll get banished for preaching such heresy.

You are getting the Mexican Snap-On stuff......its junk......You need the USA Snap-on stuff its much better. Just kidding man, nothing wrong with Mexico. You said he searched in the back of the store for 45min looking for the pliers, what store sells Snap-On, its only available by truck or internet, I'm just curious.

Snap-on makes great tools, but like anything mass produced there will be a few that slip past QC. Don't buy them new, search the classifieds here, CL, and the bay. You can get some good deals.

Doing R&D on tools for the Chinese to steal is expensive. Snap-On has to make up the costs somehow. ;)

In deed it does. And it also looks more of a toy with the pocket clip than a serious tool, but anyway it was my first encounter with SnapOn and I probably expected the screws will tighten/untighten themselves when I show them the magic of SnapOn

SDD224O at nine dollars....hmmmm.

Isn't that the part number for the little orange handled pocket screwdriver?

I bought a few more of those off the SO truck a couple of months ago and they were three dollars apiece.

WoD

That's the one.

The only snap-on tool i own is a caliper piston compressor from Blue-Point, it was $14.95 and i got a gift card for christmas. i have a pair of shoes, $120. thats about it, i honestly think its pointless to pay hundreds for tools when you can get the same thing from Northern Tool or Harbor Freight with the same warranty for fractions of the snap-on price. And snap-on doesnt even have a lifetime warranty on all of their tools, maybe more than other brands, but not all.

Blue Point is not Snap-on. You cannot buy the "same thing" from Northern or HF.

To each his own. Some like corvettes, some like geo metros.

And some are still convinced the Corvette, and displaying the gold medallion and hairy chest that go with it, are cool.

geo metros are cool in their own right and in some cases have held there value better than some vettes. Saw quite a few selling for more than $6,000 during last "pinch" in '08 :D

So, can please somebody explain me what all the fuzz is about SnapOn, because I just don't get it.

They are the Harley Davidson of tools: Over rated & over priced. I hate the ergonomics of their wrenches. The only tool that came from a factory that damn near killed me the first time I used it was an electric SnapOn grinder.

Well after I went back and reviewed this post and looked up the pricing...what are you yakking about?

It's a pocket screw driver, use it as it is intended for. If it's bent all the way back to the handle, you misused it.

The 86CF only cost $35.50 before tax, where did you get $56?

And $400 for a set? I show $235 before tax, see below

86CF $35.50
46ACP $28.00
87CF $37.50
57AHLP $55.75
196CF $40.75
96CF $37.50

If your local dealer had to look for 45 minutes for pliers, that's his problem. I really dislike tool guys whom don't know their own tools. Selling tools but they can't find their own tools in their own truck. That's like an auto mechanic whom can't work on cars.

I'm not stuck to one brand, I have tools from all possible sources. Try using a SO "Dual 80" ratchet or a Matco 88. That's where the trucks will shine.

Agree with above statement's ^^^. I personally like Snapon for a variety of reasons but I stick with there main hard line tools only. Using a pocket screwdriver with a clip as your judgement of Snapon tools in general is just outright ridicules. As well as your pricing info is way off (a lie) or you just way over paid (got ripped off)! I'll be the first to admit on many of there products you can find a comparable alternative that is probably almost the same quality for a lot less, but the very best quality comes at a price. But not all of there tool's especially certain specialty or oddball tools or equipment are the best by any means, it's just a majority of there main line is generally very high quality compared to other brands.

I love my snap on stuff, try to buy it whenever possible, but I'm not a fanatic and have plenty other brands in my box. IMHO the dual 80s are the best ratchet I've used, snap on hex bit sockets are also unrivaled IMHO, I've put those things through hell and back and never let me down.

Think you and several others are missing the point. He is in mexico, not the US, and they list many STORES who sell snap on. Different distribution channels for different countries?

Oh that's too funny :D

Yeah at some point you get to be a certain age and the whole coolness factor or trying to be cool just gets thrown out the window. That's when you know you really are finally cool.

Look at the direction this thread is going.....that is what troll's do. They post something like this and wait for the fireworks to start, and they have.;)

And it seems to be working because lot's of people have some strange blind following or preconcieved notions with Snap-On.;)

The pliers 86CF are 35.50 on the website
+ tax
+ import cost/tax
+ profit of the hardware store
----------------------------
At the end I paid 652 pesos, which with the current exchange rate is 56 USD.

In a few weeks I want to start working on the sheetmetal of my Camaro and want to get a set of hammers, dollies, spoons etc...
The SnapOn set 2007BFB online costs $509.35
When I asked for the price in the hardware store, the answer was 9800 pesos, which is currently 835 USD :scared:
I mean at the end... Its only hammers and some nicely shaped pieces of steel.

My intention in not to insult anyone or start fights. I just dont get it. There are tools that are of the same quality (probably off the same assembly line) that are cheaper and have the same function.

You just took the blue pill. From now on, you will be hunted by those who took the red pill.

I can't remember which one I took...

It seems to me you need to make some border runs and buy all of your future snap-on tools from USA.

I have actually had good luck with my little pocket snap-on screwdriver, Maybe the QC in mexico isn't as good. They do have their own plants down there, last I checked.
