Rock Island 577. Was in my grandfather's shop. One of the many tools from there which I very much enjoy to use and preserve. This thing is big. I will get a better picture of it with something to compare the size to, that is, if anyone is interested..

ABO - love the Pappa comment! Now I know where the 3 inch and under vises come from......big vises.
gilbo - very nicely done with the naked vise finish! I almost did this one in the ****....but it came out black. Charles Parker 272 model.

I though it was time to show my humble American vise some love today and decided to freshen it up a bit.

As you can see the vise has seen some better day's. I found it in the basement of my home when I first moved in. It looks like someone was using the top guide/support as an anvil and distorted it quite a bit.

I know it's not too much to look at. But for my needs, it work's out pretty well.

Here is basically what I did.

1. Disassemble.
2. Applied some Aircraft Remover to remove the residual paint.
3. Used a wire wheel and cleaned up the rust and other crud.
4. Shot it with some primer
5. Shot some Rustoleum "Hammered" Gray to it.
6. Reassembled.

Guys, I picked up a Craftsman 5160 and its the same identical vise to the Rock Island 571, jaws and all.......Fellas I have four 3" vintage vises that I will be listing on Ebay in the next month. These two, a Columbian, and a Athol, all jaws in A-1 condition.

Looks like an older 745 Mechanics vise in Hi-vis color.
Very good , tough vises, Made in USA generation of a couple or more decades ago.
Usually on sticker side of jaws will be cast n "made in USA'

Buy it. Use it hard for decades.

nice looking vises guys!!

I can finally join the club--I purchased two this past weekend.

One is a Wilton that came with the steel work bench for $52.50

The other is a Littlestown No. 500 for $35.

BTW--what is the notched collar on the Wilton for? I have not done much with it yet... eventually I can see doing a vise repaint on both...all the inspiration is on this thread....

I'll be putting one a week on hopefully with other vises. "Autopts" $75 each starting price and I may not get any bids. I'm checking now to see if they will fit in a large FRB. The Columbian is going first.

I believe that Wilton was a anniversary model and it came with different type spindle assemblies. I have new serrated jaws for that model just in case yours are trashed.

That Anniversary Wilton has a really different shape to it. It looks to be big enough to handle many more years of duty. Nice information!

STANLEY SWEETHEART BENCH VISE #766
I usually do not like clamp-on type bench vises, but this is the exception.
It is constructed very well and the moving jaw is pretty tight due to the machined box surrounding the leadscrew. The replaceable steel jaws are 3" wide and opens 3" wide. The 766 was the largest of the series and is shown in the 1953 catalog on Page 122.

It is nice n meaty like an Athol. My first thought was maybe the same maker for that vise no one could id a few days back but then I realized it has a cylindrical hub.
