Vintage Fluorescent Fixture Transformer

Does it matter which of the two leads on this transformer I connect to the positive side of my new cord, and which to the brown/hot wire?

It shouldn't.

But to be safe...use an ohm meter and measure from one of the leads to the case. If open resistance...your good to go.

Basically, your testing to make sure the transformer is not grounded......that would be bad....

Ok, I'll do that tomorrow evening.

Also, this thing was just stuffed into the base of the lamp, loose. It was kept from moving around by an old 1950s-era newspaper that had been crumpled up.

I'd like to secure it a bit better. Someone suggested using silicone caulk to adhere it to the inside of the base. Is this reasonable?
