I am not really a “newbie” on this forum, but I have basically spent the past few years lurking around, listening and learning, because I have not had a lot of knowledge or experience to share. With that said, this forum has been an invaluable resource, and I want to openly express my appreciation for all the good advice that I have benefited from.

This past winter, I finally got the chance to buy an old body shop building, and it basically needed a complete renovation. There are actually two buildings, a 50 x 60 foot main building, with a four bay garage in the rear.

I am not a mechanic by vocation, more of a hobbyist, and therefore my shop is not intended for major mechanical work. I do quite a bit of high performance recreational driving, so I do a lot of the basic work to maintain my cars for track use.

The renovation included:
1. New outside metal skin and roof, awning and striping.
2. Expanded the (2) 9’ wide doors to (3) 12’ wide doors.
3. Major drywall repair, covered almost all walls with pegboard and shelving brackets.
4. Replaced all fluorescent lights, added deflectors and ceiling fans.
5. Installed central HVAC.
6. Floor was in bad shape. I had it diamond grinded, acid stained, epoxy coated and urethane top coat.
7. Added 30’ custom built shelving on one wall, and 6’ mop sink and cabinet unit.
8. Added 30’ concrete aprons into rear doors, and 6’ at front doors, including steel bollards to protect the sides.
9. Painted rear 4 bay garage to match front building.
10. Painted and carpeted 14’ x 20’ office.

That is the story for the current time. The next step is the move-in, and then the decorating. I expect that it will take me several months to get it the way I want it. I will post up additional pictures as progress is made.
For now, here are the before and after pictures. Enjoy!

Fantastic make-over! Hard to believe it is the same building!

What brand of storage cabinets did you install? Where are you located (not noted in your profile info)?

The storage cabinets are just wooden cabinets with MDF board overlay doors, and tool cabinet handles ordered from Kobalt. I have had the same style cabinets in my home garage for 15 years, and they have held up fine.

Nice makeover! Looks great. Looks 100% better than what you started with.

Are you planning on paving the outside areas? Driving through the gravel constantly doesn't help the cars or the floor.

love the concrete floor. give the place a "purposeful" look, but still looks clean. the exterior really cleaned up well too. You've got a great space there!

I can't tell from the pic but is the concrete stained? We stained the concrete in my office at work. It adds character and I'd like it better if the floor was in a little better shape.
Very nice space BTW.

Nice. Can't wait to see it getting used!

Love the big workbenches... I'd end up messing them with tools and stuff though...

The contrast between the before and after on the shop is simply amazing. The vision you had and created of what it would look like from what you started with is awe inspiring. A big .

I expected a slight rework with maybe some fresh paint, some stuff moved from one side of the garage to the other...but noooooo you went full tilt. This is more of a transformation than a makeover. Looks great!

Did you build the cabinets yourself or purchase them? If you built them, do you have any related pics?

Ditto on the previous complements on the floor finish. Looks really sharp!

:) First off, thank you all very much for all the kudos for my project. It means a lot to have the appreciation of the many talented people on the GJ.

I will try to post more pics as I move forward on the move in and decoration. As far as I have progressed, there are still many more upgrades to come. So stay tuned.

The front lot is completely paved, so I just had it sealed for now. The cars will only be going in and out of the front doors, so no problem there.

The lot is set up so I can take my 35' double car trailer around the building and come in the rear door and drive out the front door. No backing up! I also installed a water faucet at the rear to rinse off the tires before entering the shop.

I did consider paving the rear lot, but the $18k bid was over my budget for now.

I can't tell from the pic but is the concrete stained? We stained the concrete in my office at work. It adds character and I'd like it better if the floor was in a little better shape.

Yes, the concrete floor is stained. The color is black. Like black cars, it looks great when clean, but it is high maintenance

Is the four bay garage a separate building or attached somehow?

Yes, the four bay garage is a separate building, located about 75' directly behind the main shop. It has one separate bay that was used as a paint spray booth, and I am going to put in a wood working shop, which will be great for controlling the dust, etc. The other bays will be used mainly for storage, it is really just a bonus.

The cabinets were my own design, but I had them built by a local cabinet shop.

Sorry, but there were no "in progress" pictures. In fact, the "before" pics was just a spur of the moment decision, and I took them with my cell phone.

The concrete floor is acid stain, epoxy and urethane.

Thanks for the kind words.
