I guess this is my garage. It's where I keep most of my antique tools. Me and my partner started making whiskey last year and just built a new Mash house and plumbed a new 60 gallon still in. Can't wait till the fist batch this year is ready to go into the barrell:) I really love the old school pulley rig to pull the top off. These were in my gramps barn:) I also used many of his old tools to build this place. We make 155 proof rye whiskey called OLD HOMICIDE and unaged corn whiskey (whitelighting) called Whiskey ****.....

That's Cool....how long does it sit in the barrel?

I have several friends who have made their own beer but this just takes it to a whole new level. Is it ironic earlier today I heard the song "Revenoor Man" by George Jones....hahaha

Umm.. are you really Steve Earl? Seriously though, looks like a really nice operation you have there, but, ahh...isn't it illegal?

Thanks for comments guys. We do have the permits to make it just not sell it at this point(in Ohio that is). We can sell it through distributors but at this point we will let it sit and age. It has to sit in the northern white oak (from Minn) for about 4 years give or take to taste. We only make a little over a hundered gallons a year. This is are second year so we geared it up a bit by getting a larger still. We had to do a ton of paperwork and jump through red tape you wouldn't believe. It is also a pain getting bonded which you have to do. Oh, and yes once we start selling this fall I will be looking for a 32 Ford or something to deliver the goodies. We heat the stills with propane but looking at different options. I would love to find a huge hotplate or something that you could sit a thousand pounds or so on...Any suggestions?

Im a bit surprised by your building. In the 4 years NY has allowed farmers to have class D distilleries now, I have visited several, and they all had to be in fully enclosed, drywalled buildings for the state inspector to sign off on operation. What does Ohio require to get a permit?

It does have to be fully enclosed and on the top where you can't see there is chicken wire doubled up so that no one can crawl over the top. The facility is fully bonded and we have video camaras with a live internet feed. We use all copper plumbing and stainless mash pots. We are in the process of getting several large copper kettels to make up the mash. As of now we don't mix corn and rye but now that we have two stills we can do some different runs. The barrells are only 15 gallon and a few are empty as of now...

Very classic looking set-up. Now you need to get some crock "corn liquor" jugs that would be collectable when the contents were consumed and would help you market your product.

I'm going to call for appt. Thanks for the link. I want some prices on some big kettels. I know they're not cheap but they will last as long as I have left on this big piece of dirt..

Nice setup. I've been following the growing artisan distiller movement and wish I was closer so I could try some.

For people interested, its actually pretty easy to get a license to distill ethanol (alcohol), you just can't drink it. You can get a free permit in most states to distill ethanol for fuel purposes. Drinking it (and it is consumable) is not legal until you go through many more hurdles. Despite it being "illegal" there are many people who are nano-distillers (distilling small amounts of alcohol at home as a hobby without the intent to sale). homedistiller.org/forum is one of their forums.

When I was young, my dad and our neighbor made moonshine in our shed. To fuel the burner, my dad stole natural gas from the city. (probably the only illegal thing than man ever did)

The house we lived in was once a duplex. When it was converted to a single family, the second meter was taken off the tee and capped with a plug. He ran the gas line from the shed up to the meter, unscrewed the cap plug and attached his line and then buried it all back.

I was young but I remember the first pint of so would come out of the condenser at 185 proof. He had made a batch one time and filled up a five gallon charcoal wood barrel. It sat on a shelf in his shed for about 10 years until one day when he was cleaning out the shed, it rolled off the shelf and broke open on the concrete floor. The look on my dad's face was horrifying.

When you go, don't be afraid to walk over to the fire dept and say hi.

Hey, It looks like we are going to get the law passed here in Ohio to actually sell what we make on the location where we make it. It has been a long journey but it seem like it might be paying off in the near future! Now we just have to wait another 22 months or so for the first batch to be aged 4 years and ready for sale. Check us out at ESdistillery.com

Awesome and congratulations thanks for the link. If we are interested in "pre-ordering" should we go through your sales/marketing rep?

Thanks,

Robert

Recently a professional illegal still was caught about 40 miles from me. According to the pics in the paper, it was made from stainless steel with one of those plastic square tanks in a steel mesh cage to hold the mash. They would cut a peach in half and put it in a quart jar with the whiskey and sell it as necterine brandy. I've forgotten the prices they were getting but it seemed awful high to me. After the bust someone made up commerative T shirts with a pic of the still as it appeared in the news media with initials of the ones who got caught on it. I wonder which made them the most money, the T shirt sales or the whiskey sales.

Good questions KEH. I know I'm working on t-shirts but I sure hope the whiskey makes more. If someone wants to pre-order just drop a email on the site. I must warn you it's expensive but worth every penny. We have the smallest craft distillery in the country(thats legal) haha. We make every gallon by hand and the process takes a week to make just a few gallons of the good stuff. It's approx 150 proof but it's so smooth you wouldn't come close to guessing that #. A nice slow heat down to your belly with some good flavors and no after taste. Old Homicide 150... To die for!
