For several years I've been looking to expand my tool storage capacity but I have yet to find a reasonable priced used, ball-bearing equipped cabinet. Even local auction prices are high.

I found this old Beach top and bottom unit at a garage sale this past weekend. It had sliders and was... uh... 'well used' ! But it did have a price tag of $100 so it got my attention. A little negotiation brought the price down to $65.

Most of the bigger drawers would hardly move, one missing drawer, and a couple of broken rails that attach to the upper cabinet.. likely due to a straightened corner :(

I might try a couple of plug welds with a mig to reattach the rails, but I havn't got that far yet. Maybe some JB Weld?

I later found a wheel that needed a nut....

I have the lower cabinet functional and am working on the upper cabinet:

The top sliders await cleaning:

I cleaned up the sliders. Most of them had an accumulation of dried grease. Many were bent from the drawers being overloaded. A minute or two with the official slider straightening tool and they were back into reasonable shape.

I sprayed the cleaned and straightened sliders with white lithium grease and it made a vast improvement. Look! Drawers that will open and close without using two hands and bracing my feet against the wheels !!

A couple more hours of elbow grease and I can start loading some of my overflow/rarely-used tools into them.

Looks like it will clean up nicely and provide some extra tool storage. I would have bought that too!

Curious as to your method of cleaning the slides. I have an old Kennedy chest I'm slowly redoing and although the slides and drawers all function properly they are a little gritty and don't slide real smooth. How'd the white lithium grease work for lube? I've been wondering what a good lube would be.

Sprays on like a penetrating oil then leaves a thick slippery high pressure grease like substance behind. Great for car door hinges too!

Scrape dried grease off. I don't have a parts washer so I sprayed with brake cleaner, wipe clean. Wrap rag around the scraper end to clean the 'inner' slide.

I used white lithium in a spray can. Seems to work well but I don't know how well it will stand up. A friend of mine uses synthetic axle grease.

Nice work Rob!

I'll toss some pics of mine up soon too.... As soon as I can get the kitchen cabinets out of the garage and INTO the kitchen.

Congrats on saving that nice old Beech.

To clean the slides, just put them all in a plastic bucket, spray with a lot of cleaner, purple, green, orange, your choice, fill with HOT water, let soak overnight. Rinse with HOT water and you're good to go.

I've straightened many a slide with the same techniques you used. A large smooth jaw vise also works well.
