congrats on joining the 289 club

Thanks, Terry. ;)

The 289 is a super sweet meter. I've got a 189 and a 97 scopemeter rite now and they're both mint. Soon a 289 and 196C scopemeter will be taking their place! I'm a test equipment junkie.

You won't be at all disappointed with the 289. What a machine! It's a great meter, and i'm not using it even remotely near its potential. Love it!

The 196C is a sweet ScopeMeter, but waaaaaaaay out of my price range unfortunately.

Well they both work great! Used to 289 to do some min/max voltage and resistance checks on a failed ABS pump on a Disco, then used the ScopeMeter to check the ABS sensors. With the wheels off the ground, the ScopeMeter hooked up to the sensor wiring and the car put in drive i could check them all.

Liking this new level of diag. The guys i work with were blown away by what this stuff can do. They didn't know what a scope was until i got one..

Is that 123 capable of ignition scoping? If so then they'll really be blown away when you learn how to do that.

I believe so. (How do i find out? All i really know is that it's 20MHz rated..) I need the capacative adapters and HT lead extension for pencil-style coil packs though. I've hardly used it still, aside from a couple hall effect sensors i played with.

Going to use it with the amp clamp to check the current ramp on a fuel pump tomorrow.

I'm curious about this too....

A co-worker may be selling me his 123 and at 20mhz I'm not sure if this is a fast enough scope to catch ignition waveforms

Is the higher the MHz (Frequency) rating the faster it is? Mine is 20MHz, a Snap-on Verus ignition scope is rated at 3MHz.

For me it's still great, i use it for checking sensors and it'll serve me good to learn on. Need a low-range amp clamp for it though. Been adding to the kit recently. Pics soon!

Well, I'm not 100% sure to be honest....

However, I do know that at work we have to do a test of our aircraft engine fire extinguishing circuit and we have to make sure the current is high enough to blow the squibs in the fire extinguishing bottles. There are 2 different pulses to make sure the fire bottle blows (one straight from the battery bus and one that is digitally controlled from a control unit - this is the hard to see one).

The test straight from the manufacturer actually states to check it with a scope, however, the 123 we have at work can never seem to catch it. It's a very low current and super fast pulse and the 123 simply can't grab it. We can catch the pulse that comes from the battery bus but not the other. I actually grabbed a 0.5amp circuit breaker and tried to catch it that way but the pulse is not of a long enough duration to pop it.

So I'm not sold on the 123 quite yet......maybe there's something we are missing with it.

Nice one Moose, I'm literally researching now to buy my first ever multimeter - 'hobby' use only, I think a scopemeter might be a bit overkill for me at this point (oh, and I still need both my kidneys! lol). Been wanting one for years - soon... [evil laugh]

Looking at eBay UK and USA - most here are unbranded chinese rubbish. :(
