The beginning of my 30x40x12

After waiting a long time to get grading done, I am finally getting started on my shop.

/likewoah016.jpg[/IMG]I ordered a Kentucky Steel and will get it in the first two weeks of November. My concrete was finished on Friday (Oct 12) but one of my kids keeps stealing my camera. I will post more pictures as time goes on. I have waited 12 years for this shop so needless to say I am excited! Curious to know if anyone else has a Kentucky building. I wouldn't mind some feedback or pics if there are any.

Here has been unusally dry, as is most of the region. Alot of our trees have been browning out for the last month due to the lack of substancial rain. Also, alot of plants and trees I planted this year have died because I couldn't share alot of well water with them. They say that instead of the week long color change here in the mountains that attracts tourists, the color will change faster and be more of a brown and green transition. Not the yellows, golds, and browns you see so many pictures of each year. The draught also left me with a dry and dusty worksite. It was hard to pack the ground enough to build on. Chances are, when I get my building here, it will rain everyday and delay the work!

I understand that this is a floating slab (no footers) and I know that the footer is built into edge of the slab but why are there four spots where this footer area is larger (mid section of the slab).

Nice start and I am planning on using a floating slab as well.

The building requires the same general size footers as a stick built, but it also requires "piers" measuring app. 3' square x 2' deep under the main legs of the building. I finally got some pics to put up. I have worked on it now for three full days total since delivery. Since the time change, it's dark when I get home from work so I only have Fridays and Saturdays.

Thanks to my friends who came out the first day, Nathan, Echo, Teodoro, JT, my grandad, my mom, and my wife for operating the forklift when everyone else had gone home. We worked by lights way into the night. JT is a homebuilder by trade and he made sure that we kept it square. I'll be taking more pics as I keep piecing it together.

Well, I've been working on it for nearly 24 days straight (with a few sore days off occasionally) and it is moving along! I have only the front wall and garage doors, and some eave and gable trim left but I figure I have a week left on the outside. I work until dark so alot has been done by lights. Then I can start the electrical (EMT) and get moved in and begin work (projects, projects!!!!) I'll put up some more pics after the front wall is done.

It is a Kentucky Steel Truss Building. It wasn't the cheapest I priced for the size, BUT they gave me a 35 year warranty on the paint. All the others only give 20. It has a typical 50 year warranty on the structure. I plan to do alot of auto work, but some wood work. I'll put in a two-post lift in the next year or so. I also like the 2' on center girts and purlins rather than the normal 4' oc that most other buildings have. I have a friend who is building a similar size pole barn shop and when he dropped by and said I was moving right along, I told him I had been working on it for nearly a month. He was shocked because he has been building his since MARCH! It really hasn't been a hard building to put up. Did I mention it only took them 3 weeks to deliver! Most of the other building companies told me 6 or 7. I would still be waiting on it!

At least you were nice enough to just call them hippies...lol. If I said what I normally call them, I would be banned from this site for life! Digging here does bite! Everytime my wife wants to plant something in the yard, I break out the gas auger, and usually, it breaks me. Still better than a shovel! And yes, anyone stops by, and you'll be on a ladder with a screw gun!lol. As far as the curves, LOVE IT! When me and the wife used to vacation here, we used to fight over who got to drive the twisties! Now, I get to drive my MR2 on 'em everyday! Weeeeeee

I have the front wall framed in. will be getting the doors up hopefully Friday. I'll put up the front wall cladding after the doors so I can access the door hardware more easily from both inside and out while hanging those heavy #@%^! Gotta get it closed in soon! It isn't getting any warmer outside! Plus, everytime the wind blows, the inside fills up with leaves. I caught some on fire (smokin) the other night while cutting some of the framework for the front. Other than the trim work, that's all I have left. Then I can start on my electricity! So I can run a heater!!!!

Well, I have worked on it for 40 days, mostly by myself, with the occasional "second set of hands" and help with the heavy lifting in the beginning, and I have finished it! I do lack a few screws in the gable trim (maybe 20mins. worth of work), but it is dry inside (and dark, no electricity yet). I hope to take some pics this evening if the rain and darkness holds out long enough. I do have one recommendation for anyone building this type of structure themselves, SCAFFOLDING! I did it with ladders and learned the hard way. It is a terrible punishment to go up a ladder 10,000 times to put in 5,000 screws! Spend the extra and rent scaffolding. I also learned that after installing 5,000 screws, you can double the amount of weight you can bench press by the time you are done!

I'll second Yotaforce on the scaffolding. We trimmed out the front of the first dormer on our garage via ladder. The next two we used scaffolding. No comparison.

I have the electric yet to install. Fallowing the advise of many here and installing a 200amp service, all 20amp 110v outlets, and a few to run the big 220v toys. 40 days to build. Sure I could have spent the $3500 to hire a contractor to put it up in 4 days, but what is the satisfaction in that? I get to tell everyone that I did it, and I get to put that money to good use INSIDE the shop!!
