Advise needed on a splice kit

You have a few choices. Just make sure you buy a quality splice kit. Here's another one that is a good one to use.

3-M makes a number of different kits as well... I suspect Grainger carries them, as do other similar supply houses. Of course an electrician supply company would also have them, but they may not sell to a consumer.

This what you will need,a decent electrical supply place like Westburne,Guillevin or Eecol should be able to get it,and if you are real lucky will rent you the hy-press tool you will need to crimp the sleeves.

I wouldnt do it. I would (and have ) pull the wire up out of the ground,build a pedistal with a 12x12 box on it and split bolt the wires. I just do not like underground splices.

You need to be running four wires, not three......... well, I'm not sure in Canada, but I think their requirement for two hots, a neutral and a ground is the same as the US.

Just for clarification,there are 4 wires in my run,but only 3 in the box. The ground is in the trench and spliced to a grounding rod at the base of the pedistal. Because the equipment at the splice location is all plastic it does not need a service ground,but the end termination does.

We do quite a few underground splices, mostly fixing bad spots in direct burial aluminum. We'll cut the bad spot out, splice it back together with a crimped buttsplice and then cover it with an adhesive lined heatshrink. Make sure the heatshrink extends onto the insulation at least 2-3 inches or more to make a good seal.

Take some Simple Green or some other kind of cleaner and rag down into the ditch. Make sure you get that old wire clean so the heatshrink will adhere properly.
