Silly question, since being on here I notice you americans buy alot from department stores, we have similar stores down here but down here we also have easy access to trade stores do you guys not have easy access to trade stores? When I say trade store I am not meaning the tool section of a store that sells everything I mean a really trade store.

I'm not sure I follow you.... are you talking about a small hardware store thats owned by a local guy? If thats what you're talking about around by me we USED to have that. In theory its a great concept. You deal with one guy most of the time since its a small place. He knows what he's selling and obviously doesn't want to sell **** because he wants to keep HIS business going. I'd say about 15 years ago all BIG name guys came in (Home Depot, Lowes, Ace) and pushed the little guy out. Its good in some situations and bad in others. You have a lot of stuff in stock ready to be sold but you also have a lot of **** in stock that is garbage. You buy some POS.. install it and it doesn't work.. you take it back because of poor quality and some other poor sap installs it and the same thing happens. Obviously that wouldn't/shouldn't happen at a local hardware store.

Thats sort of what I was meaning, down here we have whats known as franchise stores yet while they operate under a big company banner they are independatly owned and operated, what I was meaning by trade stores was a place where they only sell trade stuff whether it be tools, welding gear, shop equipment machines and sipplies. We have box stores just like you guys and we also have the same variance in quality of stuff as you guys but I know you guys have alot of good companies like williams and wright and companies that get raved about yet I keep hearing the comment that you can only get that stuff at industry supply places are those trade shop supply places hard to get to or something.

William, the stores: Home Depot, Lowes, and Menards are very large hardware/lumberyards, that IMO sell tools cheaper than our trade stores. We also have tool trucks than have routes to auto body and mechanic shops etc.

We are the same way generally you pay more at a trade store but here its abit relative, our stores that would be our equivelent of your home depot or whatever cater more for the building and home renovation industry, so if we want decent mechanical or engineering tools we are still quite reliant on trade stores. Thanks for answering my questions was very interesting.

I was talking about the hand tool.

Everytime I walk into a lowes or a HD or a trade store like the supply houses I goto I always check out the tools.

There is a supply house across the street from my shop that is moving and I am waiting to see what they mark down on their hand tools
