stumbling into a bunch of tools

So my dad's here for the holidays and while I'm telling him of the few items I've picked up he says he'll be "getting rid of" all his old tools he never uses, including wood tools.

He's on the other side of the country but I'm convincing him it's worth it for him to pack all that stuff up so I can either A) keep it and use it B) sell some for him on ebay.

Can't wait till he actually gets around to packing up all the sockets, ratchets, wrenches etc that are collecting dust and sends them my way.

Just had to share with someone.

Would be interested to see what he has. Usually old collections are the best kind... :)

Free tools are always great especially from your Dad. My Dad did not work on much of anything though so as a kid I was always the one wanting tools.

It'll be another 18 years but I can't wait to pass on a big set of nice tools to my son.

The part I enjoy is when my 5 year old son comes to the garage and wants to see, touch and play with any tool he can get his mitts on. He is always wanting to adopt my tools so he can drag them off to his room!

The part that really makes me chuckle is when he pedals his bike or metal riding tractor into the garage and starts grabbing tools to work on his tractor!

I have already made plans for the difficult years that are sure to follow when he hits the irresponsible age and thinks he needs to dig around in my tool boxes. I have keys and locks for everything so I plan to set him up with a decent set of seconds in his own chest and rollaway and keep the stuff I cannot afford for him to lose safely locked up under lock and key till he understands the signifigance and value of what is locked away. (no worries for now, the shop is detached and he only has access when I am around)

I wish my dad would have done the same thing when I was a kid; instead he left his small carry box unlocked and setting in the garage where I generally opened it and played with his tools till mom came along and tried to load the goods back into his box so he would not notice! Yea, like any guy would not notice that someone had been rummaging around through their box! I never lost a single tool but I cannot begin to tell you how many *** whoopins I took for being in that box! I was likely all of 5-7 years old during that time.

I will forever wonder why he did not simply put a small lock on the hasp that the box was equipped with instead of beatin my *** on a daily basis for my transgressions? I have no plans of replicating that practice; I guess he was just an old school kind of guy. :headscrat

My dad started me out with the basic ratchets and wrenches, buying me other tools for Christmas and birthdays. Now my tool collection is bigger than his. Now he asks "will you be leaving this when you move out?". Haha, I very well may do that though as I will probably want to upgrade by then anyways. Definitely on the compressor, maybe on the welder.

cant complain about dad. saying he has been good to me is an understatment

I will say he is straightforeward enough to tell me that if I now have the tools then I am the one that will be doing the work.
