If I could see it in my hands I might buy one, but so far old ones that work fine show up at the swapmeets for about $7, and I don't know how the new ones might compare.

For those who don't have one, these are very stout ratchets with a nice feel. Everyone who has used mine has commented positively...even the "I won't touch anything but a Snap_On" guys.

I shudder to think what the "global" PROTO will be once these are all gone.

I might buy another one.

I'm tempted too. The new version Craftsman raised panel I've got in my truck tool box just doesn't inspire confidence in me. I too, wonder what Proto will be like in the future. It just doesn't seem right

I think they are going "global" like the rest of Stanley. There have been tons of US-made Stanley, Proto, Blackhawk, etc. tools showing up at the liquidation sites in large quantities.

I suspect that's where all of those Proto ratchets on eBay came from. I have bought several lots of sockets, wrenches, etc., and they have all been US made new old stock. A large amount is Proto/Challenger.

I think it looks great and I would not mind having one; but when you already have nearly 20 different 3/8" ratchets that all work just fine it becomes a bit difficult to justify throwing another on the pile unless you encounter it for something insane like 50 cents or a dollar! I cannot pass those deals up; that is how I ended up with so many 3/8" ratchets!

I agree with the angle of sweep. I'd like to get the least amount of angle required for a 3/8 (and 1/4) inch ratchet. Does Proto have a comparable ratchet with the nice feel but say 5 deg sweep?

What about Craftsmen.. others? What should I keep my eye out on ebay for?

I have rarely ever had an issue with the amount of degree swing with regards to a standard ratchet. I think if you have enough specialty type ratchets this is rarely ever an issue at all. Between thumb ratchets, shorty ratchets, long ratchets, thin head ratchets, compact heads, flex heads, bent handles, and the vast assortment of drivers you can arm yourself with this rapidly becomes less and less of an issue; but again, to each his own!

No response at all.

Strange as I've best offered dozens of items, some I got, some I didn't, but this is the first one that just plain ignored it.
By now, I don't care if I get it or not.

Word to wise for Big Dawg owners.... I picked up my Big Dawg yesterday off my bench and one of the 2 screws that hold the mechanism together was missing! I freaked since this is my #1 ratchet. I took a look around on my bench and found the missing screw and washer. Time to buy some LockTite for these suckers...

I have been a huge fan of that version in the long handle. I have had at least one for a good twenty years or so. Armstrong also offers a killer long handle chrome 1/2" ratchet!

I have those as well, They are a very old but very tough and reliable design that dates back to when they were plomb.

Cause I clicked it about a year ago. What I'm tempted to do is get a second one. The great thing about these forums is finding out about great deals or passing them onto other members. Kinda like the fliers for your auctions.

I pretty much only work on Japanese sportbikes and space is a serious issue. Thats the main reason why I like the smaller swing arc. Every bike has 10 pounds stuffed into a 5 pound bag.

I'm in the same boat... I have more tools than I have hands to use them..It is a great deal, but my garage is filled with "great deals", and it is time to clear out some of these "great deals" so I can get a car in there.
