Went last night to our local Sears store and checked out their clearance section. There we a few Mechanic Tool Sets marked down pretty low so I picked one up. It was a 305 pc. set that was listed at $499.99 and marked down to $160.86. All you Craftsman fans should ask where are their clearance section as I just stumbled on it by chance by the tool cabinet/chest section.

Unfortunately my Sears never does that. I always check the clearance only to find that half the set is missing and they marked it down a whole $2.60 or some other random amount. They probably wonder why the stuff never sells. They have boxes that looked like they were dropped off a cliff, knock $30 off. No thanks.

No link it's a store by store clearance. Wife and I checked out the tools and found out that it was missing the SAE nut drivers and a 12mm socket. Talked to the woman that was helping us about the set and she said, "if it's not all there come back and see her and she will gladly take care of it". Very happy with the purchase, I wished I had found them before I purchased the 145pc. set before Christmas.

Did it come in a case? What tools are in it? I thought I might have seen something in a black case.

Orange Calif store as well as the Tustin Essentials both have a clearance section, but prices are nuts, typically full price or maybe 10% off. Gearwrench set that is normally $59, on sale for $29, missing a wrench was $54.

For open package/customer return stuff on clearance it is often good to check the price with an associate in the tool department. At my local Sears, these things are supposed to be marked down an additional percentage every week they sit on the shelf. The price on the ticket often does not reflect this additional markdown. A couple of times when I have inquired about the price of these items, the associate just asked me to make an offer. I have gotten a few great deals on the Sears clearance shelf.

My local stores the "associates" are rabbits in the headlights with clearance, they scan the tag or punch in a sku and, duh, its full price, just used and returned with no package etc.

the clearance area discount pends on the person doing the discount. figure out who that is and play nice with them. I have bought several midchests and a couple of top boxes at great deals. all had the most minor of damage.
one time I bought a top box for my dad on sale for $269. they had one marked down for a small dent and scratch but the marked down price was higher than the same price. after some negociating on the basis of buying both I got the one on sale for $269 and the other one for $100.
trust me, be friendly with the guy that can do the mark downs every time you go in.

Our small Sears store has stuff every week in the clearance cart for 50% off. Pick sets, sockets sets, ratchets, milti meters, wrench sets etc. A lot of times the owner will knock another 10% off because I'm a steady customer.

You must go to the same Sears I do.

San Bernardino Sears is a crapshoot as to what the clerk will say about anything you bring up. I have to print out everything I ever see online as the prices are always 10% higher at the store than what they are supposed to be.
